Franklin, Wis., Aug. 24--Bret Sievert took home top honors by winning the
UMP late model feature Saturday on American Concrete Foundation Specialists
Penny Pick-Up Night.
Don Scheffler won the night's sportsmen feature with a last-lap pass of
Don
Sorce Jr. and Mike Knurr led flag to flag in winning the Pro Graphics
Modified Triple Crown feature.
Rick Scheffler led the opening six laps of the 30-lap UMP late model
feature as Sievert, who started sixth, moved to the runner-up spot. Sievert
used the outside lane in turn four to take the lead at lap seven.
Scheffler remained in the runner-up spot until lap 14 when Scott Specht
took the position. Up front, however, there was no catching Sievert as he
went on to post a dominating victory. Specht placed second with Scheffler
third and Russ Scheffler fourth in an amazing comeback after flipping during
qualifying.
Sorce Jr. had the 20-lap sportsmen feature in hand heading into the final
lap as he had led the event from the outset. Runner-up Don Scheffler
surprised him racing up the backstretch, however, as he used the high line
to move ahead heading into turn three. Exiting the fourth turn, Sorce tried
to battle back but Scheffler had the momentum up top and held on to win by a
half-car length. Roger Lee placed third, with Jeff Tondryk fourth and Mark
Lewis fifth.
Knurr pulled away at will to win the 35-lap Modified Triple Crown
feature.
Jason Zdroik, who pitted during a lap 16 yellow and restarted from the rear,
moved to the runner-up spot on lap 28 and trailed Knurr at the finish.
Jimmy Muth Jr. placed third, with Mike Watson fourth and Dan Tafelski fifth.
David Brown rolled over during the heat race portion of the modified
program but was not injured.
Racing continues at the Hales Corners Speedway on Saturday night, Aug.
31.
The program will be topped by a special 50-lap feature for the high-powered
UMP late models, plus a full program of sportsmen, modified and Hales Whales
racing, plus the new 4-cylinder class. Time trials are at 6:15 p.m., with
racing immediately following qualifying. Hales Corners Speedway is located
