#21 Giaffone IRL Gateway Saturday Qualifying
MADISON, Ill. (Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002) -- Felipe Giaffone and the #21
Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Chevrolet G-Force will start Sunday's Gateway Indy
250 from the inside of the fourth row after practice and qualifying today at
the Gateway International Raceway 1.25-mile egg-shaped oval. Giaffone
turned a fast lap of 25.9091 seconds (173.684 mph) to take the seventh spot
on the grid. He is just 17 points behind series points leader Sam Hornish,
Jr., entering this weekend's third-to-last event of the 2002 Indy Racing
League season.
Gil de Ferran earned the pole in 25.6967 seconds (175.120 mph), followed by
Hornish at 25.7203 seconds (174.959 mph). Helio Castroneves qualified third
in 25.7232 seconds (174.939 mph).
Race time Sunday is 2 p.m. local time (3 p.m. EDT) with a live broadcast set
for ESPN.
FELIPE GIAFFONE
"Starting seventh is not bad. It's about what we were expecting. I had
just said, after the second practice, that I believed we could start in the
sixth or seventh positions. We didn't have too much time to work on the
qualifying setup, so we spent most of the day in race setup. So that's what
we've got. Turn 1 here is tough. Sometimes, with three cars running
side-by-side, it's good to be up front to avoid problems. I believe we are
going to be in good shape for the race. We intend to use the morning
practice on Sunday to try a different setup for gearing. It will help a lot
for the race, and I believe the teams starting up front have figured it
out."
