CHEVROLET/TEAM MONTE CARLO NOTES AND QUOTES
SHARPIE 500
BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY
ROUND 24 OF 36
NASCAR WINSTON CUP SERIES
FRIDAY, AUG. 23, 2002
POST-QUALIFYING:
JEFF GREEN, NO. 30 AMERICA ONLINE CHEVY MONTE CARLO (18th): "It was pretty
comfortable. My car got tighter on that set of tires for some reason and
just had to slow it down too much in the corner to be able to run where I
thought we needed to. We should have run in the .40s, but we ran a .58.
It¹s still a good starting place for us, but when you¹re trying to go for
the pole it¹s kind of disappointing."
KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 29 GM GOODWRENCH CHEVY MONTE CARLO (23rd): "It was a lot
better. We kind of started off real loose this morning and we put the next
set of tires on it and it went to pushing really bad. We¹ve been on both
sides of the fence and just tried to have to kind of guess at qualifying. It
was better than I thought that it was going to be and I just didn¹t get
after it hard enough, but that¹s a lot better than we were in practice."
JOE NEMECHEK, NO. 25 UAW-DELPHI CHEVY MONTE CARLO (20th): "It¹s pretty
exciting from the driver¹s seat. We¹re just trying to get something going
for the whole UAW-Delphi team. We¹ve kind of struggled and been struggling
and just trying to get it going. This is a good track. We weren¹t too bad in
practice. In qualifying we were just extremely loose; it just seems that
every time qualifying comes we get loose. I should say in the past when I¹ve
been here. Just loose; just glad I brought it back in one piece. We picked
up time from where we were this morning in the first practice. It was a good
day for us."
ROBBY GORDON, NO. 31 CINGULAR WIRELESS CHEVY MONTE CARLO (30th): "My second
lap was my fastest because I got sideways on the first lap. Just
disappointed that we had a car that had a shot at the pole and for some
reason it stepped sideways on me going down into turn 1." BECAUSE OF WEATHER
CONDITIONS? "I¹m sure the heat had a little bit to do with it. I¹m sure the
water had a little bit to do with it, but everybody else overcame it a
little bit. Maybe I drove it in a little too deep or the car just stepped
out for some unknown reason. Had a really good (turn) 1 and 2 the first lap,
just got sideways going into 3 on the first lap and the problem was I didn¹t
have a lot of speed coming to the line here for the second lap. I think it
even slowed down my second lap a little bit."
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE¹S CHEVY MONTE CARLO: ON WHAT HAPPENED IN
PRACTICE THIS MORNING (32nd): "Of all the things that we¹ve had happen to
us on Friday so far this is the least amount of work I¹ve had to put my guys
through for whatever reason. We should be good. We were trying to make a
Œqualifying run¹ and the car got loose on me and I grazed the outside wall
(on) the driver corner. We didn¹t get a chance to see what we really had
because I did that on the first lap. We thought like the car was going to be
good."
