CASCAR - Point Standings & Kawartha Wrap
CASCAR Super Series
August 21, 2002
Don Thomson is in the driver's seat heading to the 'Great Canadian Race
Weekend'
LONDON, ON - Defending CASCAR Super Series champion Don Thomson Jr. did
everything he could on Sunday afternoon at Kawartha Speedway to take
another step toward his second National championship. The Home Hardware
Chevy driver won the pole, led the most laps, and won the race. His victory
in the Kawartha Racetrack Slots 200 - for the second year in a row - means
that the Hamilton, ON racer owns the distinction of being the only CASCAR
racer ever to have tasted victory at Kawartha Speedway.
With only the "Great Canadian Race Weekend" remaining on the 2002 Super
Series schedule, at Delaware Speedway on September 27-29, Thomson is
quietly confident about his chances for repeating. But don't look for him
to do any celebrating, just yet. "We're not going to get our hopes up too
high," said Thomson, after his second Super Series victory of the season.
"Obviously, there are two points races left. We'll savour this victory and
worry about the points at the end of September."
His newly extended 54-point lead in the standings, over second-place DJ
Kennington (Castrol Intrepid), will give Thomson an edge entering the final
two points events of the season. As was the case at the recent Mopar 500
Race Weekend, in Calgary, Delaware's 'Twin 100 Qualifying Sprint Races'
(Sept. 27) will count for just as many points as the 300-lap 'Great
Canadian Race' on Sunday, Sept. 29.
Kennington suffered a broken wheel rim at Kawartha, which dropped him to
10th at the finish, one lap behind Thomson. The St. Thomas, ON racer isn't
ready to give up the title without a fight. Echoing Thomson's comments,
Kennington said, "We've got two more points races to go and we're still in
this thing. We usually run pretty well at Delaware." The young veteran won
a Sportsman track championship at Delaware and is correct in stating that
he has a history of success at the half-mile London oval. Most recently, he
earned the pole for the season-opening Mopar 250 at Delaware.
CASCAR NOTES: The CASCAR Western Series has added an event to replace the
August 17 race that was originally scheduled for Bridge City Speedway, in
Saskatoon. The new event will be called the Wetaskiwin / EMCO 200, and it
will take place at Edmonton International Raceway, on Saturday evening,
September 7. Super Series regular Kevin Dowler is the driving force behind
the event, which is being presented by CASCAR, in conjunction with Dowler's
Apollo Motorsports and his company, Whitemud Mechanical. The race will mark
the first visit by CASCAR to Dowler's hometown since the final 'National'
event was held at the Edmonton City Centre Airport, in 2000. For more
information on the Wetaskiwin / EMCO 200 at Edmonton Int'l Raceway, contact
Bob Ennis at the CASCAR Western Series office at (403) 272-1801.
