LOS ANGELES--Aug. 20, 2002--The City of Los Angeles recently purchased 34 trucks for the city's sanitation department that will utilize Marmon-Herrington's Low Floor Front Drive to improve safety and productivity.
Over the next few weeks, Marmon-Herrington will be converting the 34 truck chassis to Low Floor Front Drive utilizing an Axleless(R) rear independent air-ride suspension, and dedicated Marmon-Herrington front wheel drive components. This innovative drive technology allows the vehicle's floor to be positioned at the right height for any application - down to as low as 14 inches!
There are many advantages to converting a truck's chassis to Low Floor Front Drive. Ambulances have increased interior height and width for performing medical services. Food service delivery trucks don't have the need for ramps and lifts. Boarding a city bus is now as easy as stepping onto the curb. Repair crews now access their tools at street level. Vending and office machinery is being rolled directly from the side of the vehicle onto the sidewalk. Low Floor Front Drive eliminates the need for a lift gate, thereby doing away with dangerous rear unloading in traffic. On-demand buses with Low Floor Front Drive can comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act by eliminating costly and time-consuming wheelchair lifts.
A Low Floor Front Drive demonstrator is currently making its way through the Golden State. The demo is turning the heads of representatives involved in everything from municipalities to mobile kitchens, to those who simply need a lower floor.
