Grand-Am Cup Points Race Tightest of the Season
Grand-Am Cup Points Race Tightest of the Season
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 19, 2002) -- With only four races left in the Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series 10-race season, the championship points race is closer than ever. The driver and team championships are up for grabs in each of the four classes, with the largest points lead following the 2.5-hour race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course only 11 points. Three new leaders emerged following the Mid-Ohio race and several others are within striking distance.
Doncaster Racing was able to hold on to its lead in the Grand Sport I class despite the Mid-Ohio win by its rival Powell Motorsports. Doncaster Racing, who took the points lead from Powell Motorsports following the Virginia International Raceway event in June, finished second at Mid-Ohio. Doncaster drivers Scott Maxwell and David Empringham held onto the top spot in the class team and driver standings, but saw their lead cut in half to only three points by Powell's Doug Goad and Devon Powell.
The Grand Sport II class also saw the leaders' margin cut following a win by their rivals. Max Q Motorsports' Emil Assentato and Nick Longhi continue to lead the GS II team and driver points, but a victory by Shreiner Racing cut the team's advantage from 13 to eight points in the team standings. Shreiner drivers Jeff Lapcevich and John Shreiner also reduced the leading margin in the driver points race to 11 points.
Team Lexus driver Jean-Francois Dumoulin captured the top spot in the Sport Touring I driver standings following the Mid-Ohio event. Dumoulin took a seven-point lead over former leader Beau Buisson, of Villaconn International.
However, Villaconn International was able to maintain its position at the front of the ST I team standings. A strong showing by King Motorsports cut Villaconn's leading margin from 13 points to four. Team Lexus also gained ground on the leader with its #0 and #2 entries only eight and 10 points, respectively, behind Villaconn in the team standings.
Bill Fenton Motorsports re-emerged as the points leader in the Sport Touring II class following a victory at Mid-Ohio. The team reclaimed its lead in the ST II team standings, knocking the HRPworld.com team back to second place by only a one-point margin. HRPworld.com drivers Wayne and Will Nonnamaker continue atop the ST II driver standings, but they are now in a three-way tie with Bill Fenton Motorsports driver Bob Beede.
In the manufacturer point standings, Porsche and Chevy continue to battle it out in the GS I class, with Porsche leading by five points. Ford holds a strong lead over BMW in the GS II class. Acura took over the lead in the ST I class passing BMW, who now trails by seven points. Acura is also on top in the ST II standings with an impressive advantage over Mazda.
The Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series will return to Virginia International Raceway next week for Twin 250s during the VIR 500 event weekend. Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased online at www.virclub.com or by calling 888-RACE-099.

Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series Driver Point Standings
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 19, 2002) -- The Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series awards points to drivers based upon their finish in their respective class. Although drivers may race in more than one class during a race, they are only awarded points in the first car they drive. Only drivers holding valid Grand American Road Racing Association memberships are awarded points. The driver points reflect the top-20 drivers in each class after the sixth race of the season.
