Telcordia Energy Solution Among World's 100 Top Technological Contributions of 2002

    MORRISTOWN, N.J.--Aug. 19, 2002--Telcordia Technologies, a leader in the development of the world's most advanced communications services, network technologies and Operations Support Systems (OSSs), has received R&D Magazine's 40th anniversary R&D 100 Award for the company's Asymmetric Hybrid Supercapacitor technology. This innovative technology offers a new way to meet the increasing power needs of today's mobile society.
    Winners of this prestigious award are chosen each year by a panel of more than 70 industry experts. They identify the 100 most technologically significant products and processes introduced in the previous year. The sole criterion for receiving the award is demonstrable "technological significance." Telcordia Technologies is the recipient of 14 previous R&D Magazine top 100 awards.
    In years past, the R&D 100 Awards have recognized many products that later became household names, including the flashcube (1965), the automated teller machine (1973), the halogen lamp (1974), the fax machine (1975), the liquid crystal display (1980), the printer (1986), and HDTV (1998).
    Asymmetric Hybrid technology from Telcordia combines the high power delivery of a supercapacitor with the high energy density of a battery, and comes at a time when the automotive industry is seeking a solution to satisfy the power needs of today's sophisticated hybrid energy vehicles.

    The technology offers greater freedom of design because it can be packaged as a flexible plastic, thinner than a credit card. It can also be used as a standalone power source, or in combination with a battery or fuel cell. When combined with other energy sources, it enables a "division of tasks" to match the power and energy requirements of the most demanding automotive energy applications. Significantly, the technology shows no lifetime degradation from charge/discharge-induced strain overcoming the life-span energy and cost limitations of traditional batteries.
    The technology improves thermal performance and results in less weight for flexible fuel-efficient vehicle design. This reduction in volume allows automotive designers to recapture usable space under the hood, and adds to potential cost savings. Many of these benefits can directly carry over to the growing fleet of today's hybrid gas/electric automobiles.
