Hales Corners Speedway results - 08/17/2002

Franklin, Wis., Aug. 17--Defending track champ Russ Scheffler led
flag-to-flag in winning the UMP late model feature at the Hales Corners
Speedway on Saturday night.
Dave Gorny came back from being stuffed in the fence a week ago to notch
an
impressive win in the third and championship round of the Borchardt Speed -
Automotive Sportsmen Triple Crown, while Mike Conn topped the
caution-plagued modified feature.
Scheffler started the 30-lap UMP late model headliner from the pole and
took the lead at the start. At lap six current point leader Bret Sievert
moved to second and began to challenge Scheffler for the top spot. Through
the next 24 laps and three caution flags Sievert and Scheffler battled, but
the nine-time track champ held on to take the victory. Sievert settled for
second, with Scott Specht third, Jim Letizia fourth and Chris Carlson fifth.
Gorny started the 35-lap sportsmen main event from the outside of row one
and got the jump on polesitter Mark Lewis at the start. Lewis stayed with
Gorny and on lap 12 used the low side of the track to take the lead in turns
three and four.
Gorny battled back on the high side of the track to retake command a lap
later with what proved to be the winning pass. On lap 21 Don Sorce Jr.
moved to second as Lewis began to fade. Gorny held off Sorce Jr. following
a caution with six laps remaining to pick up the victory. Jeff Tondryk
finished third with Don Scheffler fourth and Lewis fifth. Lewis failed to
roll across the scales after the event, however, and was disqualified,
promoting Eddie Lemay Jr. to fifth in the revised finish.
Mike Conn won the yellow flag infested modified feature, which was
stopped
after 18 of the scheduled 20 laps were completed. Brian Crapser was second,
with Jim Zdroik third.
