Porter Edges Jenkins in Auto Intensive Care 100 Late Model Action at
Hardeeville

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (August 17, 2002) - The O.C. Welch Ford Lincoln Mercury
Late Models returned to racing action in the Auto Intensive Care 100
Saturday night and Tommy Porter Jr. of Savannah, GA edged Shane Jenkins of
Statesboro, GA by less than a foot to capture the $1500 first prize.
Porter and Jenkins battled back and forth for the top spot while pole
setter Randy Cook of Guyton, GA slowly reeled them back in to finish third.
Porter said after the race, "Shane ran a great race and we had a good car,
we were fortunate enough to come away with the win."

The Legend Cars were also back in action and they provided action to the
more than 1,250 race fans coming out barring the early evening threatening
thunder and lightning storms. Several cars were involved in some minor
crashes, but Heywood Barton, Jr. of Guyton, GA flipped his Legend car
coming out of turn 2, ending his night prematurely. Barton walked away
unscathed by the incident. Jimmy Lang of Bluffton, SC (the National Legends
Cars Semi-Pro Asphalt points leader) managed to avoid on-track scuffles and
put his #8 car in Victory Lane for the third time this season, with Kevin
Eves of Guyton, GA and Jonathan Haidon of Hilton Head, SC coming in second
and third respectively.

The Big Kahuna II Street Car Showdown also was on tap as five drivers
brought their cars, trucks and mini-vans from the parking lot to the
1/5-mile track for a double elimination event. Craig Eves, the brother of
Legends Cars driver Kevin Eves, of Guyton, GA came away with the $200.00
top prize and the "Big Kahuna" title besting his '85 Camaro over a '94
Corvette of Chris Evans. Jim Beckett of Ridgeland, SC, driving a '89 Chevy
Mini-Van challenged all of the drivers to a burnout contest after the Big
Kahuna Street Car Showdown, only to have Bill Johnson from Hilton Head, SC
take the challenge. Beckett put the mini-van up first and poured on a 35+
second burnout filling the grandstands with plumes of white smoke. After
Beckett's burnout, the other driver congratulated Beckett and took himself
out of the running, giving Beckett the victory for his efforts.

Mini Stock action saw Stephen Moore of St. George, SC come away victorious
as he beat Johnny Brown of Bluffton, SC and David Carr, Jr. of Martinez,
GA. The ever-popular Road Warriors were also back running two separate
events with Jessie Soto of Savannah, GA and Roy Ridgeway of Sardena, SC
taking the checkered flag in race 1 and 2 respectively. In other action, a
couple of race fans found themselves as lucky winners and took rides around
the 1/3-mile high-banked oval in the 650+ horsepower HMS Winston Cup Car.
One special race fan, Kelly Canney of Beaufort, SC celebrated her upcoming
birthday with special gifts and a behind the scene look at race day
operations. The highlight for her night was the gift from her husband as
she took a 5-lap ride in the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. After her ride
around the track with Cup Car driver Steve Perry, Kelly was ecstatic as she
simply said, "….WOW…. !!"

Racing action takes a one-week break, but next Saturday from 10:00 am until
3:00pm, the Inaugural MotorMania will be at the speedway. MotorMania is a
car, truck, tractor, motorcycle and racecar show, with door prizes all day
long and special events for the contestants and spectators. Racing action
returns Saturday night, August 31st as the 3rd Annual HMS National Open
showcasing a 150-lap Late Model race with 50 lap features for Legends,
Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and Xtreme Stock Cars. Road Warrior action also
returns that night. Qualifying will take place on Friday night, August
30th. Then September 12th through the 14th, the 2nd annual Legends Cars
World Finals will be held at the HMS, featuring all of the top Legend Cars
from all across the USA along with our local Legends drivers
