Cummins Inc. Receives EPA Certification for Second ISB Engine

    COLUMBUS, Ind.--Aug. 15, 2002--Cummins Inc. announced today that it has received certification for its medium duty ISB engine from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA approval certifies that the ISB complies with the strict new emission standards that go into effect for these Cummins products October 1, 2002 for medium duty diesel engines in North America.
    The EPA certification further demonstrates Cummins commitment to provide our customers with the best performing products while still meeting the tough environmental standards that were agreed upon by the industry. Cummins is on schedule to have a full product line available for customers by the deadline.
    The 5.9-liter ISB engine is used in trucks, buses, RV's, fire trucks, step vans and many other medium duty applications. The ISB has earned a reputation as an industry leader in performance, fuel economy and durability.

    The new ISB was introduced in Europe more than a year ago and is proving to be a reliability and performance leader. To meet the EPA emissions standard, a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) subsystem was added. In addition to the base engine experience in Europe, the new ISB with the cooled EGR subsystem will have more than one million field test miles by the time of production. Customer feedback has been outstanding on the performance of the new ISB.

    The ISB is the second Cummins engine to receive early certification by the EPA at the 2.5 gram NOx + NMHC standard. On April 2, Cummins announced that its ISX engine, used for heavy duty trucking, became the first engine certified to the new EPA standard. At that time the company stated that it would certify the ISB engine mid-summer, and the ISM engine before to the October deadline. The company continues on schedule to meet these commitments.
    Limited production of the 2.5 gram compliant ISB has already started and will follow a managed ramp up to full production by October.
