NOTES OF INTEREST: Fresh from the 1.33-mile concrete Nashville
Superspeedway, the world’s most versatile stock car tour is headed back
to its roots. Born on the dirt in 1953, the ARCA RE/MAX Series warriors
next visit the 1-mile dirt Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield for
this Sunday’s (Aug 18) Allen Crowe Memorial 100. The Allen Crowe
Memorial 100 ARCA RE/MAX race is the largest sporting event in the state
capital city of Springfield. This year’s event will be the 51st ARCA
RE/MAX race held on a clay oval since 1974 and the 20th ARCA race on the
Springfield mile since 1983. At present, 42 teams representing 14 states
are entered including Illinois drivers’ Eric Smith, Todd Coon, Joe
Cooksey, Bob Strait, Charlie Schaefer, Chris Geier and Justin Allgaier.
If Allgaier makes the field, he will tie Shelby Howard in the honor of
being the youngest ARCA RE/MAX Series driver/starter in the history of
the series. Both drivers, in their first attempt, were/will be 16 years
and 76 days. Drivers making their first ARCA RE/MAX appearance at
Springfield include leading ARCA Rookie of the Year contender and 2nd in
points Chad Blount, 18-year old Chase Montgomery (4th in points coming
off career-best 3rd at Nashville), Ed Wettlaufer, Howard, Steve
Senerchia, Tim Fulford, Allgaier, Alton McBride and Hueytown AL legend
Red Farmer. Farmer, in a Jason Jarrett/ML Motorsports back-up car, at 71
years young, is the oldest driver in the field. However, Farmer, who
serves as Jarrett’s consultant, is still very much active in dirt late
model racing. The Old Milwaukee Pole Award at Springfield will be
named/presented in honor of the memory of Dean Roper. Roper was the
winningest ARCA driver on dirt since 1974 with 9 wins at Springfield,
DuQuoin and Terre Haute. After 19 RE/MAX Series events at Springfield, 5
have been won from the pole – Bob Keselowski in 1987, Bob Brevak in
1990, Bob Hill in 1994, Ken Schrader in 1998 and defending race winner
Frank Kimmel in 2001. Kimmel, the current point leader, has won 3 of the
last 4 ARCA races on dirt (Springfield twice and DuQuoin). In addition,
the 3-time champ won on the West VA Motor Speedway clay oval in 1997.
Past ARCA RE/MAX Series winners at Springfield include Bob Keselowski 4,
Dean Roper 3, Bobby Bowsher, Frank Kimmel & Tim Steele 2, and Bill
Baird, Bob Brevak, Bob Hill, Bobby Jacks, Ken Schrader and Billy Thomas
all with 1.
