ROSS FONFERKO SENSATIONAL IN MID-OHIO DEBUT
WHEATON, Ill. (August 14, 2002)- Ross Fonferko, of Wheaton, Ill., captured
his first win in only his second start in the fiercely competitive 2002
Zetec Formula Ford 2000 Championship Series, at the highly technical and
challenging Mid-Ohio Race track.
Starting in fifth position, after an unfortunate abbreviated qualifying
session, Fonferko managed to avoid an incident between Bryan Sellers and
Lawson Aschenbach in the infamous Keyhole at the start, to move into fourth
place. A few laps later, Fonferko out braked teammate and Championship
leader Bryan Sellers into turn seven, to take over third place. On lap 11,
Fonferko dove to the inside of a very competitive J.W. Urlin in turn seven,
to move into second place
After a full course yellow and restart on lap 15, Fonferko put intense
pressure on Sean McIntosh and attempted a pass into turn 12 and was driven
down into the grass. He maintained control of the car and sliced back to the
inside of McIntosh going side by side through turn 12. Then, in a gutsy
maneuver, Fonferko passed McIntosh around the outside of the carousel, turn
14, for the lead. Fonferko then drove away, pulling out almost a 5 second
lead on the field, for a strong win in Round 10 of the Zetec Formula Ford
2000 Championship.
“I’m elated with the results of this weekend,” said Fonferko. “Finishing on
the podium in third place in my first race on Saturday, and then winning in
my second race on Sunday, has made for a spectacular weekend. I really have
to thank the guys at Cape Motorsports, Dominic, Nicholas, and my mechanic
J.D. for giving me a great car to drive all weekend. It was perfect! I also
have to thank my teammate, Bryan Sellers, for his very gratuitous support. I
could not have done it without them. I am privileged to be driving with
them. I also want to thank my sponsors, JR & Associates, Ross Racing Inc.,
John Shafer, and Pete Ball for making this possible. I would not be here
without them.”
Ross is looking forward to competing in the remaining races in the Zetec
Championship, at Road Atlanta and Virginia International Raceway.
