LOS ANGELES--Aug. 13, 2002--The average price of gasoline in Southern California dropped nearly two cents per gallon in August compared with July, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's monthly Fuel Gauge Report. The Southern California average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline is $1.622, down from the July average of $1.640. The current price is a penny below the state average of $1.632, which is down six-tenths of a cent from June's price. San Francisco area motorists now pay an average of $1.79, down a cent from last month. The lowest average price in the state can be found in Marysville, where regular self-serve unleaded gas can be pumped for $1.43. The most expensive gasoline in the state is in Yreka, where the price is $1.86.
Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline rose nearly two cents to $1.405. Georgia has the lowest state average at $1.258 per gallon.
"Motorists have experienced relative price stability all through the summer," said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp. "Approaching the end of the summer driving season, our Southern California average is less than a penny higher than it was back in the middle of May. Gasoline production has been high all summer long, so we expect to see prices close to where they are now or even a little lower through the next month."
