Flat tire drops Vanderwyst to 15th at Autodrome Montmagny
MONTMAGNY, QC - The common theme running through the rundown of Pete
Vanderwyst's lower finishes, in 2002, has been the presence of flat tires.
That trend continued on Sunday afternoon at Autodrome Montmagny. The Exide
Pontiac driver started ninth in the 200-lap race at the flat, 1/3-mile
Quebec City-area track, but ran into trouble when the right-rear tire went
flat, forcing him to the pits. The problem was compounded later in the race
when the same thing happened again, bringing him pitside for a second stop.
And given the quick lap times that the teams were turning, the St. Thomas,
Ontario racer lost a total of four laps while his team made the Exide
Pontiac race-ready again. At the end of the afternoon, Vanderwyst came home
15th , four laps down on the leaders. Heading into the next-to-last race of
the CASCAR Super Series season, Vanderwyst is 11th in the overall point
standings.
"We had two flat tires today," sighed Vanderwyst, after emerging from the
Exide Pontiac on the steamy summer afternoon. "It's tough to come all this
way and have the guys work so hard only to have it go south because of a
couple flats. On the bright side, it was the right-rear tires that went
down, so we seem to have figured out the problem with our flat
right-fronts," joked Vanderwyst.
And when it wasn't flat tires that the team was fighting, it was a fickle
handling condition. "We just had a real loose car, and then it went really
tight, and back again. It just wasn't a good day for us."
The Exide team's difficulty during the race was all the more frustrating
because the team had enjoyed a solid practice session on Saturday
afternoon, under similar conditions to Sunday afternoon's race. The trip to
Autodrome Montmagny was the first-ever by CASCAR's top division.
"Yesterday in testing, we did some long runs and I was really happy with
the car. But for whatever reason, we just missed it today and it turned
into a long afternoon."
Following the race, the ultra-competitive Vanderwyst said the distance
traveled to reach Autodrome Montmagny made the result all the more frustrating.
"It's tough to come all the way out here, driving all night, and then head
back home after a race like this. But we'll get to Kawartha and try to do
it all over again. On the bright side, we're bringing the car home in one
piece."
RACE SUMMARY: Dave Whitlock won his second CASCAR Super Series race of the
season, at Autodrome Montmagny. The veteran driver took the lead on lap 169
of the 200 lap affair, and held off DJ Kennington and reigning Super Series
champ Don Thomson Jr. to take the checked flag for the second time in as
many outings in the province of Quebec, this season. Whitlock won, back in
June, at Autodrome St-Eustache, near Montreal.
NEXT RACE: The CASCAR Super Series' 11th event of the season will take
place this coming weekend at Kawartha Speedway, near Peterborough, Ontario.
"We didn't do too well at Kawartha last year, so we're hoping to figure
that place out and score a good finish," concluded Vanderwyst. The 200-lap
race is a one-day show, scheduled for Sunday afternoon (August. 18).
