Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course - Lexington, Ohio - 2.258-Mile Road Course
Round 11 of 19 on the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series

Tony Kanaan and his #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola was
running in third place at today's CART Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio when a
yet-to-be-determined mechanical problem ended his shot at the team's second
consecutive podium finish just 14 laps from the end of the 92-lap event.
Kanaan started fourth and held that position through the first two of today'
s three mandatory pit stops. He moved into third when then-second-place
Cristiano da Matta spun off the track while trying to take the lead on Lap
69 and brought out the yellow. Kanaan made his final pit stop under that
yellow and re-emerged in third. Just nine laps later, he reported that
something in the engine or drivetrain seized, and he coasted into the pits,
where his day ended.

Polesitter Patrick Carpentier won for the second time in three races today,
leading all but three laps in beating runner-up Christian Fittipaldi and the
third-place-finishing Michael Andretti to the checkered flag.

The next stop on the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series tour is next
weekend (Aug. 18), the Grand Prix of Road America featuring the Motorola
220.

TONY KANAAN QUOTES

"This is about as disappointing as you can imagine. We had a solid race car
and we were going to have an easy third-place finish for the second race in
a row. Something just locked up when I went to brake in the carousel. I
don't know if it was in the engine or the gearbox or the driveshaft. It's
just a shame. I'm absolutely at a loss for words. It's just been one of
those years. I don't know what else to say other than let's turn another
page and see if we can learn what happened and correct it for next week. We
're all trying our best. We're just going to keep working hard, just like
we did today. One thing for sure, we're never going to give up the fight."
