NICHOLSON, MINER ON TOP UNDER THE LIGHTS

        POMONA, Calif. - Qualifying concluded under the lights at Pomona
Raceway with over 700 race cars doing battle at the Budweiser Summer Nights
of Fire presented by Big-O Tires. 
        In Top Alcohol Dragster, Darren Nicholson sits on top with a
5.617-second pass at 253.30 mph. Morgan Lucas follows the Mission Viejo
driver with a 5.628-second, 253.52-mph pass. Lucas is coming off his first
win of his young career in the alcohol class, taking home the win last
weekend in Sonoma at the Fram Autolite Nationals
        "That second qualifying pass impressed me," voiced Nicholoson. "A
5.617 (second pass) in this heat gives us exactly what we need for
tomorrow. If we can duplicate that pass, we'll be hard to beat."
        Joining Nicholson as number one qualifier is Larry Miner who led
Top Alcohol Funny Car with a 5.891-second pass at 235.91 mph. Jason Rupert
sits in the number two spot with his '02 Lucas Oil Camaro Funny Car with a
lap of 5.899, 241.22.
        "The track is good," commented Minor, "everyone should be running
better but I'm not complaining. We're number one going into eliminations
and that's where we want to be. Three nice, straight, mid 5.90 runs and we
should be in the winner's circle."
        Andy Manna Jr. qualified his '33 Ford on top in the Comp Eliminator
class with a run 8.838 seconds while Orange, Calif. resident Don Studley is
number one in Super Stock with a pass of 10.460 seconds in his '99 Dakota.
Sarah Norsworthy is number one in Stock at 12.469. 
        Eliminations continue Sunday at 11 a.m. for the Lucas Oil Drag
Racing Series. Gates at Pomona Raceway open at 8 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster
and Funny Car round one is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. For more information
