Doncaster Captures Grand-Am Cup Pole at Mid-Ohio
LEXINGTON, Ohio (August 9, 2002) -- Scott Maxwell drove his #76 Doncaster Racing Telus/CIBC Porsche GT3 to the best time in qualifying Friday for the Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series race that will run at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Saturday afternoon. Maxwell's time of 1:32.632 at an average speed of 87.754 mph was more than a second quicker than Devon Powell in the #11 Powell Motorsports Sunoco/Encompass Corvette. The two Grand Sport I cars will start on the front row of Saturday's race.
Things were quite a bit tighter in the Grand Sport II division where Benoit Theetge barely edged Alejandro Lince by less than half a second. Theetge's #73 Acura NSX posted a best time of 1:38.020 at 82.930 mph compared to Lince's #04 MTM/STOPTECH Audi S4 that came in with a time of 1:38.375.
The Sport Touring I class also saw a real fight for top honors. John Schmitt drove his #00 Honda of America RedLine Oil/DC Sports Acura RSX to the top spot with a time of 1:40.765. Barely a breath behind him was the #14 Hyundai Tiburon driven by Wade Gaughran to a time of 1:40.927.
Not to be outdone, a pair of Acura Integra LS racers fought it out for the front of the class Sport Touring II. In the end it was Wayne Nonnamaker in the #41 King Motorsports HRPworld.com car edging Bill Fenton in the #27 Southern Auto Auction Bill Fenton Motorsports entry. Nonnamaker made it around the track in a time of 1:46.052 compared to Fenton's time of 1:46.422.
