Rand Racing - Watkins Glen 1-2

Watkins Glen International
race, Aug. 9, 2002

fourth 1-2

Rand Racing scored its fourth 1-2 finish in the SRPII class during the Friday
evening Rolex Sports Car Series race at Watkins Glen International. Terry
Borcheller started the No. 8 Rand Racing Nissan Lola from the class pole
position and held the class lead through his one-hour stint on the 2.45-mile
road course. Anthony Lazzaro drove the final stint of the two-hour race and
cruised to the class win.

Niclas Jönsson started second in SRPII in the No. 7 Rand Lola. He was
hampered by an electrical problem, but held second place with lap times just
a half-second off Borcheller's. Marino Franchitti followed Jönsson in the
car. He lost a lap because of his position relative to the safety car during
two caution periods, but the pair still finished second in class.

Terry Borcheller "The race was uneventful because the 7 car had a little bit
of a motor issue early on, so it made it really easy. The difficult part was
maintaining concentration, not having anybody to run with. I was getting a
lot of [rubber] pick-up on the front tires, running through the traffic. It
was really difficult to drive and it gave me a couple of moments where I just
lost the grip on the front, then it would regain grip. That was a little bit
disconcerting and caused me to slow down in the middle of the stint."

Anthony Lazzaro "It was good driving with Terry again. We have a perfect
score together and it's kind of cool because I have a perfect score with Rand
so far. Obviously, we miss Bill [team owner Rand] being here this weekend,
but he's out working so he can make all this possible, and we really
appreciate that. Terry and I are really, really good endurance-racing
teammates. I just wonder how long a perfect score can go on!"

Marino Franchitti "Nic did a great job on the first stint and I just kept
that going. We lost a lap because of the way the yellows worked out for us,
both the first and the second yellow. If we'd got waved by the second yellow
we would have been right back in the hunt. I think we had the measure of
them today, but unfortunately we didn't get that. But it's good to be fast
and get another one-two finish for Rand Racing. And it was fun - any track
where you don't go below third gear, that flows like this track, I just can't
get enough of it."

Niclas Jönsson "We had an electrical problem the whole weekend with our
engine; sometimes the engine just went flat. Unfortunately, the engine went
flat for the whole first stint and I lost probably a second or two a lap. I
was surprised I could stay as close as I could with Terry. It's unfortunate
we couldn't give our teammates a run for the money this time. But we'll take
second and hopefully try to win [the next race] in Virginia."
