Notes/Quotes
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course - Lexington, Ohio - 2.258-Mile Road Course
Round 11 of 19 on the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series
Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola are fifth
on the provisional qualifying grid for Sunday's CART Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio.
Kanaan turned a fast lap of 1 minute, 7.515 seconds (120.400 mph) over the
2.258-mile Mid Ohio Sports Car Course permanent circuit. Later, Kanaan
actually was on a lap projected to be some three-tenths of a second quicker,
but the 1-hour session was red-flagged a minute early after the car of Tora
Takagi spun off the track and was stranded in a gravel trap. Kanaan had
spun off in the same area moments before Takagi but was able to resume.
Patrick Carpentier is on the provisional pole for Sunday's event after a
fast lap today of 1:07.040 (121.253 mph). Cristiano da Matta was second in
1:07.095 (121.154 mph), followed by his teammate Christian Fittipaldi at
1:07.436 (120.541 mph). Carpentier's teammate, Alex Tagliani, was fourth in
1:07.440 (120.534 mph).
Practice resumes at 10 a.m. EDT Saturday with final qualifying set to begin
at 1:45 p.m. EDT. Speed Channel will carry the qualifying session live
during a 90-minute show scheduled for 1:30 p.m. EDT. Race time on Sunday is
12:30 p.m. EDT with a live broadcast on CBS.
TONY KANAAN QUOTES
"The Pioneer-WorldCom car was really good. Better than the time we ended
up with. So that's very encouraging. I was on a much better lap that
probably would have put us at least third on the grid, but the red flag came
out. That's how it goes. It's only Friday. We'll go better tomorrow and
hopefully move up to the front of the grid. I had a moment there at the end
of the session. Somebody two cars ahead of me smoked his tires and I made a
tiny little move to avoid any possible trouble and ended up going off the
track. Fortunately, I didn't hit anything and kept the Honda running and
was able to keep going. I kept saying 'I'm not going to lose my fast lap
for anything.' Unfortunately, (Tora) Takagi went off right behind me and he
couldn't get going again. No problem. We're feeling confident. I'm
feeling much better in the car than I felt here last year."
