Sony Ericsson and Chapman Technologies Sign USD 142M Agreement On Vehicle Telematics

LONDON--Aug. 5, 2002--Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, and Chapman Technologies have signed an USD 142. million agreement to collaborate in the development of an in-vehicle services platform for the ever growing vehicle security and telematics marketplace.
The platform will be marketed based on Sony Ericsson's CDMA 1X RTT module and Chapman's Safeguard Security Systems digital application under the brand name Chapman Vehicle Locator(TM)(CVL-D). The platform will include CDMA communication, GPS positioning functionality and an automotive factory security interface linked to the vehicle's control systems.
First shipments are scheduled for end of 2002. Chapman's anticipated revenues for this product should exceed $360 million. The platform will be commercially available for OEM and aftermarket automotive and fleet applications by late fourth quarter 2002 and marketed through Chapman's direct sales channels.
Sony Ericsson brings its expertise in integration of the CDMA communications solution and Chapman will provide the GPS, telematics and interface protocols including vehicle, tracking and theft-recovery component applications. Chapman Command Center (C3) will provide all Safeguard Security System subscribers with 911-trained emergency response personnel, monitoring (24x365), roadside assistance and location-based concierge services.
Sony Ericsson Corporate Vice President for M2M Com, Gunilla Nordstrom: "We are elated that Chapman has selected Sony Ericsson for this ground-breaking project. The combination of Sony Ericsson's unique M2M competence across GSM/GPRS, CDMA, and TDMA cellular technologies, with Chapman's innovation and segment know-how, will undoubtedly position the effort well for capturing a solid lead in the growing and dynamic telematics industry."
Chapman Technologies Chairman and CEO Robert Chapman said "We are extremely excited about this latest opportunity of teaming up with Sony Ericsson to provide emergency, safety, and concierge services in the telematics arena".
Sony Ericsson CDMA2000 1x RTT platform creates new opportunities for applications that send wireless information via a standard CDMA network. As part of this project Chapman will provide its real time silent transfer of GPS data on all digital wireless networks. This simultaneous voice and data (SVD) technology allows for the transmission of (real time) GPS location data over a digital wireless channel normally used for voice communication only.
