Herder clinches championship in SRFKC
Herder clinches Canada Senior
Kyle Herder claims 2002 Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship Canada
Senior class championship
SHANNONVILLE, ON - Stouffville, ON's Kyle Herder is the first driver to
claim a championship in the inaugural Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting
Championship. Herder's impressive record of six wins, two poles and a
second place in eight rounds gave him 690 points. Second in the
championship is Herder's teammate, Rob Oakman with 313 points. With just
two rounds remaining, there are not enough points available for Oakman to
catch Herder.
"It's just great," said Herder. "I'm happy to be able to finish the year
just racing and not have to worry about the points. I'm very excited to
have won this for Gold Kart."
Herder has been untouchable in the highly competitive Canada Senior class.
In what is traditionally a tactical race of drafting and teamwork, Herder
has dominated to the point that the rest of the competitors are left
wondering just how this could have happened.
"You have to be perfect just to stay with him," said fellow competitor and
teammate Aaron de Heus. "One little mistake, and he just pulls away. It's
been that way all year."
With the class win, Herder gains entry to the F2000 test at the end of the
year. He will be joined by nine other, all of which are still battling it
out in the remaining three classes that have yet to be decided.
The objective of the SRFKC is to help foster a professional environment for
kart drivers; help create a positive attitude towards appearance, conduct
and discipline; help foster the employment of the best practices for the
safe and fair running of competitions; and help kart drivers to move up the
racing ladder to automobile racing.
Many of the top karters from Ontario and other provinces are scheduled to
compete in four classes (Canada Junior, Canada Senior, Formula Junior and
Formula Senior). The Formula Senior class will feature F125cc shifter
karts, which are capable of exceeding 100 mph. Both Formula classes will
make Formula 1 style standing starts.
At the end of the season, two drivers will be selected from each of the
four classes plus the two drivers from the ASN Canadian National
Championships will be invited to a one-day evaluation test at the
Bridgestone/Firestone Racing Academy at Mosport, provided they are 16 years
of age prior to the date of the test.
Out of those 10 drivers, two will earn a full scholarship to the 2003
Bridgestone/Firestone Toronto Star Wheels F2000 racing series.
