Scheffler and Gorny Star at Hales Corners Speedway

    Franklin, Wis., Aug. 3--Russ Scheffler won the UMP late model feature Saturday on Butler Night at the Hales Corners Speedway.
    Phil Rehberg, making his first start in nearly a year, paced the first 12 laps of the 50-lap headliner.  After a caution flag for separate incidents involving Mark Brunner and Jim Zdroik, Bret Sievert shot past Rehberg on the restart to take the top spot.
    Scheffler moved to second by lap 20 and set sail for Sievert, eventually clearing slower traffic on lap 23.  Scheffler caught Sievert at lap 35 and the two played a cat and mouse game as they dueled amidst the backmarkers.  When Sievert went low to clear Brunner and several other cars on lap 44, Scheffler went high.  That move won the race for Scheffler as he passed Sievert and pulled away as Sievert remained trapped for nearly a lap.
    Scheffler pulled away in the final six laps to score the win, with Sievert breaking a rear axle with just over two laps remaining.  Chris Carlson got past for the runner-up spot in the final order, with Scott Specht third, Bill Rezutek fourth and Sievert holding on for fifth.
    Dave Thomas led the opening five circuits of the 20-lap sportsmen feature before Dave Gorny took command using the outer groove up the backstretch.  Thomas eventually fell to fourth as Don Sorce Jr. and Roger Lee advanced to the second and third and spots, respectively.
    Lee got by Sorce Jr. for second on lap 16 and began to reel in Gorny.  He caught him on the final lap but Gorny was able to weather Lee's attack and take the win by just over a car-length.  Sorce Jr. was third, with Thomas fourth and Don Scheffler fifth.
