Wichita Int'l Raceway earns first team title, Home team Bandimere finishes second
DENVER - The 3rd Annual NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Western Conference Finals concluded today at Bandimere Speedway with champions, ranging in ages from 8 to 17 years-old, being crowned in eight eliminator categories.
With more than 500 drivers, representing 42 NHRA member tracks, competing for honors the action was furious throughout the day, with the young racers skill's translating into event victories.
A large part of the event was the team competition, in which drivers earned points for each round of racing completed. The coveted Team Championship went Wichita Int'l Raceway, Wichita, Kan., who earned 30 points. Finishing in second was the home team, Bandimere Speedway, with 28 points. Taking third with 27 points was Kansas City Int'l Raceway, Kansas City, Mo.
Individual event honors went to Jacy Rae Glover, Benjamin Hilton, David Thompson, Kris Whitfield, Taylor McMillen, Bobby Polson, Jordan Fojt and Cameron Ferre.
In the 8-9 year old category Thunder Valley Raceway Park's Jacy Rae Glover of Norman, Okla., emerged victorious when she took out Kansas City Int'l Raceway's Dustin Schorr of Grain Valley, Mo.
Woodburn Dragstrip's Benjamin Hilton of Vancouver, Wash., took home the 10 year-old crown when he defeated Stansbury, Utah runner Aspen Hall, racing for Rocky Mountain Raceways.
In the 11-year old category the title went to Team Pomona representative David Thompson of La Mirada, Calif., who won over Los Angeles County Raceway competitor, Taylor Nickel of San Juan Capistrano, Calif. In 1994 David's brother, Richard, was the very first Jr. Drag Racing League National Champion to be crowned when he won in the 8-9 year old category.
Taking home the victory in the 12-year-old category was hometown racer Kris Whitfield of Littleton, Co., racing for Bandimere Speedway. In the final he defeated fellow Littleton racer Nicole Rasmussen representing Pueblo Motorsports Park.
Chalking up a win for the Texas Motorplex was 13-year-old Taylor McMillen of Mesquite, Texas. In the final McMillen defeated Oregon racer Logan Eickmann of Salem. Overall the weekend was rather fruitful for McMillen, who on Friday night won a brand new Harden Race Car during a special race held to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary.
Representing Wichita Int'l Raceway, Bobby Polson of Derby, Kan., conquered the 14 year-old category when he defeated Team Pomona's Leah Pruett of Redlands, Calif.
In the 15-year old category, Jordan Fojt of Baytown, Texas, took the win home for Houston Raceway Park, when he defeated Andy Ablott of Glendora, Calif., racing for Rialto Raceway. While in the 16-17 year old category it was last year's runner up in the class, Team Possibilities racer Cameron Ferre of Huntington Beach, Calif., taking home the win. In the final he defeated Texas Motorplex runner Marcus Fowler of Colony, Texas.
In addition to competing for Team and Individual honors an award was also presented to the Western Conference Finals team with the most "spirit." This year the Team Spirit Award was presented to the north of the border team of Mission Raceway, Mission, B.C, Canada.
