ZETEC CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS TRYOUT VIR
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (August 2, 2002) —During the current break in the 2001
Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship season, teams recently took part in a
two-day test at Virginia International Raceway.
Conducted early in the week, AIM Autosport, Cape Motorsports, JDC
Motorsports, Pabst Racing Services, Richard Morgan Racing and Roquin
Motorsports all took part in the test. In hot and humid conditions, the
teams worked on various car setups for the picturesque 3.27-mile road
course. In two full days of testing, no incidents occurred, while several
drivers completed more than 100 laps. While official timing and scoring was
not present, a number of drivers are understood to have posted laps better
than 1:52.0. This time is well under the current Formula Continental lap
record of 1:54.8 and just slightly faster than the SCCA Atlantic class
record of 1:52.1. Given the weather conditions, it is expected that the pole
sitter for the races at VIR in late October, will be upwards of a second
quicker in the cooler conditions. The races in late October will mark the
Zetec Championship’s first-ever appearance at VIR, called by many as one of
the best racing track in North America, and will feature the final two
rounds of the 2001 championship season.
“The track is really fun to drive,” said Edouard Aube, who posted one of the
fastest unofficial times during the test. “The team did an excellent job. We
tried various setup and found some things that should help us a lot the rest
of the season. I’m looking forward to the next race at Mid-Ohio and coming
back here at the end of the season.”
“I like this track,” said Tonis Kasemets, who won the previous Round in the
Zetec Championship at Mid-Ohio. “It’s very fast, very interesting and very
hard. You won’t learn it in one day. It definitely favors drivers who have
experience on it. When we race here in October, it should be one of the best
races all year.”
The 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship continues with Rounds Nine and
Ten at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, August 10-11, as part of the CART
Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio.
