Toyota Announces Best-Ever July Sales

TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported record July sales of 156,053 vehicles, kicking off the third quarter with an increase of 4.6 percent over last year's best-ever July.

"The resumption of zero-percent financing and a wide range of discounts and sweet incentives have drawn buyers back into the market," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "This is a resilient and creative industry that continues to rise above challenging economic conditions."

Toyota Division enjoyed its strongest July ever with 137,493 units sold, up 4.6 percent over the same period last year. The Lexus Division also celebrated a best-ever July with sales of 18,560 units, an increase of 4.5 percent over last July.

Toyota Division passenger cars achieved a best-ever July with an increase of 8.6 percent over the same period last year, or 75,320 units sold. The all-new 2002 Camry took the reigns of passenger car sales with 38,571 units sold, up 17.2 percent over last July. Camry is currently the best-selling passenger car in America with calendar-year-to-date sales at 264,176 units, up 14.8 percent. The all-new 2003 Corolla posted an increase of 17.8 percent over the same period last year with 22,364 units sold. The Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan celebrated the two-year anniversary of its launch in the U.S. market with best-ever July sales of 1,411 units delivered, an increase of 30.6 percent. Consumers also are enjoying the summer months in their MR2 Spyder roadsters, which posted 502 units sold, an increase of 3.2 percent over last July.

Toyota Division's record July light-truck sales of 62,173 units show consumers in the midst of outdoor adventures and family travel. The Sienna minivan posted strong sales of 8,247 units sold, an increase of 6.0 percent from last July. The RAV4 compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) and the Highlander mid-size SUV both enjoyed record July sales. RAV4 sales of 8,428 units, up 9.9 percent, upstaged last year's record July. Highlander posted sales of 9,784 units, up 17.0 percent. The legendary Land Cruiser full-size SUV recorded sales of 539 units, up 11.5 percent from the same period last year.

The Lexus Division's strong month was due in part to record July passenger car sales of 12,360 units, up 14.1 percent from the same period last year. The Lexus ES 300 sedan was the luxury marque's July sales leader with 5,754 units sold, an increase of 73.9 percent. Sales of the SC 430 hardtop convertible resulted in record July numbers of 1,206 units, up 14.6 percent for the month, while the IS 300 series also reported record-breaking July sales of 1,962 units, an increase of 9.1 percent.

The LX 470 full-size SUV also reported increased sales of 671 units, up 1.0 percent over the same period last year.

Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 59.0 percent of total July sales. There were 25 selling days compared to 24 last July.
