Shane Wallace Hickory Post Race Report

SHANE WALLACE DISAPPOINTED AT HICKORY

"Rising Star Earns First Career Pole"

Hickory, North Carolina (July 29, 2002) - USAR Hooters Pro Cup "Rising Star" Shane Wallace had a weekend filled with mixed emotions at Hickory Motor Speedway. The 18 year old won his first career pole award Saturday night in the running of the Naturally Fresh Foods 250 presented by Galaxy Foods. The presented many obstacles as Wallace was relegated to a 26th place finish as a result of an on track incident.

"This is one of my favorite tracks and I knew we had a very good car," stated Wallace. "We tested here last week and then in the practice session on Saturday we really concentrated on our race set-up and not too much on qualifying. To be honest, winning the pole was a little surprising but it shows just how good this #4 RPMCARDS.COM/Engine Ice Ford really was."

The green flag saw Wallace keep his #4 Ford upfront during the early portions of the race and settled in the 4th position as the race neared the halfway point. On Lap 81, a lap car bumped Wallace and resulted in a spin and a caution period. A little upset, Shane took advantage of the caution and come down pit road for fresh tires, fuel and an adjustment.

As the action returned to green flag racing Wallace saw himself once again in an altercation with the same lapped car. This resulted in the Wallace and his #4 Ford being relegated to the garage for the rest of the night.

"I am obviously disappointed with the results of the race," said Shane. "We had an awesome race car that was capable of winning and for something like this to happen is very disappointing. But this is all part of racing and we just need to re-group and get ready for the next race at South Boston.

The 26th place finish keeps Wallace in the 10th position in the overall driver standings as well as 2nd in the tight battle for the Rookie Award.

The USAR Hooter Pro Cup Series Southern division takes a few weeks off before heading to South Boston Speedway on August 17th.
