SCCA® ProRallysm Round 7 - Maine Forest
Lovell/Turvey Win Big, Snap-up Lead for Subaru
RUMFORD, Maine Day two of the 2002 Maine Forest Rally proved to be the
lucky charmer for Mark Lovell the 2001 Drivers Champion and Steve Turvey, now
with two impressive back-to-back wins after a winless streak that lasted the
entire first half of the season. Fast action, thrilling stage roads and a
schedule friendly to fans and entrants alike are traditional characteristics
of the Maine Forest Rally, and this year didn't disappoint the fans or the
entrants.
Key Notes and Quotes:
¨ What could be described as "just driving a better rally" - Lovell and
Turvey for two days simply dodged the pitfalls of rallying better than anyone
else, and brought home a convincing win for Subaru. In addition, by earning
maximum points, Lovell has significantly enhanced his chances for a 2nd
driver's championship. Finishing nearly three minutes ahead of 2nd place
challenger Tom McGeer the defending champion also posted the largest margin
of victory of the 2002 SCCA ProRally season. That's not to say that Lovell's
drive was not without some excitement - the right front fender required some
sledgehammer adjustments at the midday service, and a hasty 17-minute
transmission swap on day one went right down to the wire.
¨ Current driver's championship points leader David Higgins, blessed with
four consecutive wins this season, suffered a variety of rallying cruel
twists, running into an embankment on Day one, damaging his front suspension,
and getting punctures early in day two, and on the last stage, the last
incident wresting away from him an almost certain 2nd place finish. It
nearly cost him the 3rd place podium position as well; a hard charging Paul
Choiniere finishing a mere 6 seconds behind. Regardless, Higgins, while not
jubilant with his finish, was ecstatic with the roads: "the stages we ran
today are simply the finest rally roads I've ever ran on - positively
incredible."
¨ Brother Mark Higgins was similarly hindered in the Hyundai, with
punctures and rear-bumper removing exercise early in Day 2. "Miggins" was
pleased with the finish, after several frustrating mechanical DNF's, the
impressively quick Tiburons finishing in 4th and 5th place.
¨ Championship Driver's standings. David Higgins: 103, Lovell: 83, Mark
Higgins: 66, Rhys Millen: 40, Mark Nelson: 39. MFG Standings: For the first
time this year, Subaru has taken the lead away from Hyundai, now leading 92
over Hyundai's 86, and Mitsubishi's 52. Mitsubishi and the talented team of
Lauchlin O'Sullivan and Matt Chester continues to expand their lead over
Mazda in Group 2, handily leading that championship 100 to 68. O'Sullivan
leads the Group 2 Drivers Championship as well.
