TEAM TARGET FINISHES 32ND AT POCONO
Spencer remains in 23rd place in NASCAR Winston Cup championship points
LONG POND, Pa. (July 28, 2002) - The No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T driven
by Jimmy Spencer finished in 32nd place in the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono
Raceway. Spencer remains in 23rd position in NASCAR Winston Cup
championship points; he is 36 points behind Kyle Petty who is currently in
22nd position.
An early caution involving Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Steve Park caused the race
to be red flagged for 65 minutes in order to have track officials repair the
damaged guardrail. Twenty laps later, another red flag for rain kept the
cars on pit road for another 2 hours and 20 minutes.
Team Target started the event in 35th place but following the rain delay and
pit stop strategy, Spencer restarted in 9th position. He radioed in early
and stated that the car was very loose in the corners and the No. 41 Dodge
began to slowly drop back through the field. On lap 140, Spencer's right
rear tire was cut when the #19 of Jeremy Mayfield came across the track
during an accident. Team Target got the car back out on the track but late
in the race Spencer had to pull in early due to motor failure.
Bill Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Dodge, won the Pennsylvania 500. Next on
the schedule for the No. 41 Target team is the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis
Motor Speedway on August 4, 2002.
