Baumgartner wins Perry Younce Memorial at Flat Rock
FLAT ROCK MI (7-27-02) Ottawa Lake, Michigan driver Dave Baumgartner
padded his point lead in the ARCA Auto Value Midget Series with a
convincing victory in the ARCA/NAMARS co-sanctioned Perry Younce
Memorial Saturday night at Flat Rock Speedway.
Baumgartner, who started sixth after winning the Old Milwaukee Quick
Time Award earlier, quickly charged his way towards the front overtaking
polesitter Adam Nuetzel on lap 13 of the 30-lap feature event. From
there, Baumgartner, in his own Weld Wheels-Simpson Autocraft Hawk, never
looked back to earn his 4th career ARCA Auto Value Midget Series
victory.
“It feels great,” said Baumgartner in victory lane. “The car was perfect
right off the trailer. I could drive it pretty much anywhere I needed
to. There’s always two good grooves to work with at Flat Rock, sometime
three. If you can make your car handle, you can pass here. I always
wanted to win the Perry Younce race for who it’s named after. I’m proud
of this one.”
The event, the 6th annual Perry Younce Memorial, was named in memory of
Perry Younce who lost his life in a Midget racing accident in 1996.
Nuetzel held on for second in front of second-generation open-wheel
driver Chris Hettinger who steered the United Cable Construction-Penske
Shocks VW to the finish in third. New Carlisle, Ohio driver Matt Brun
held off two-time ARCA Midget winner Aaron Pierce for fourth. Pierce
finished fifth ahead of Isaiah Bross, Phil Rutledge, Mel Kenyon, Paul
Perkins and two-time ARCA Midget champion Rick Harrell to complete the
top-ten finishers respectively.
