FOR RELEASE: July 27, 2002Buick Open To Stay At Warwick Hills Through 2006
Grand Blanc, Mich. - Buick announced today that the Buick Open will remain at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc through 2006.
"We are very pleased to announce that the Buick Open tournament will remain at Warwick Hills for four more years," said Roger Adams, Buick general manager. "We decided to stay in Grand Blanc because of the positive way the community responded and because the club did such an outstanding job of completely upgrading the tournament facilities. In addition to all this, GM Service and Parts Operations based in Grand Blanc, pledged their ongoing support to make the tournament a success here. Overall, the total package couldn't be matched anywhere else and as a result the Buick Open will continue at one of Michigan's finest golf venues in the years ahead."
The inaugural Buick Open, which took place at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in 1958, became the PGA Tour's first corporate sponsored event. The 2002 Buick Open is scheduled for August 5-11. It will be the 37th year the tournament has been held at Warwick Hills.
"We are very excited that the Buick Open will be held here in Grand Blanc through 2006," said Kevin Ostby, outgoing president of Warwick Hills, who spearheaded a $5.2-million renovation to the Warwick Hills Clubhouse. "I'm very appreciative of the way that Warwick Hills, the Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the tournament committee have worked to keep the tournament in Grand Blanc."
Last month, Buick announced a new four-year agreement with the PGA Tour that calls for Buick to continue as title sponsor of three PGA Tour events starting in 2003 - the Buick Open, the Buick Invitational (La Jolla, Calif.) and the Buick Classic (Harrison, N.Y.).
Buick, the largest corporate sponsor of golf, is now in its fifth decade as the PGA Tour's original sponsor. Buick is the title or presenting sponsor of five PGA Tour events in 2002 and has an endorsement agreement with the world's number one player, Tiger Woods. Buick also sponsors PGA Tour Professionals David Berganio Jr., Matt Gogel and J.J. Henry.
Buick has been the official car of the PGA Tour since 1984, an official sponsor of the domestic events of the World Golf Championships since 2000 and is a foundation sponsor of pgatour.com , the Tour's web site.
In 1990, Buick took over sponsorship of the Buick Classic at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y., and the Buick Challenge, now at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga. Buick added the Buick Invitational in La Jolla, Calif., in 1992 and became the presenting sponsor of the Tampa Bay Classic in 2001.
Through its five PGA Tour events, Buick has donated more than $23 million to charities in its tournament markets.
In January of this year, Buick took over the title sponsorship of the Buick Scramble, the world's largest amateur golf tournament with more than 100,000 participants annually.
