Notes/Quotes
Concord Pacific Place - Vancouver, B.C. - 1.781-Mile Temporary Street Course
Round 10 of 20 on the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series
Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola moved up
to the sixth spot on the starting grid for Sunday's Molson Indy Vancouver
after final qualifying this afternoon at Concord Pacific Place. Kanaan, in
a radical departure from the typical strategy employed by most teams this
season under the new 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series qualifying rules,
took the track immediately as the 60-minute session went green and set his
best lap of 1 minute, 0.763 seconds (105.518 mph) came during his first,
six-lap run. That lap moved him up six spots on the grid position of 12th
he earned in provisional qualifying on Friday.
Cristiano da Matta came from 16th on the provisional grid to earn the pole
position today with a lap of 1:00.339 (106.260 mph). Paul Tracy, the
provisional polesitter, will start second after a fast lap of 1:00.602
(105.973 mph). Dario Franchitti qualified third in 1:00.659 (105.874 mph).
Sunday's race begins at 1:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. EDT) with a live
broadcast set for Speed Channel. There also will be a 30-minute pre-race
show on Speed Channel beginning at 4 p.m. EDT.
TONY KANAAN QUOTES
"See, everybody go in a traffic jam yesterday afternoon so they decided to
go out early today. Unfortunately, a lot of other cars decided to do the
same thing as we did today, but not enough to make a big difference. After
struggling again in practice this morning, we came up with a totally
different setup. Everything. Shocks, springs, suspension geometry. We
came out with a setup for today's qualifying session that we have never run
before with this car. And we got it right. I've got to hand it to (team
owner) Morris (Nunn) and (engineer) Iain (Watt) for coming up with the right
recipe today. I've got to say this is the best I've felt in a while. Now
that we are headed in the right direction, we have a foundation to build our
setup decisions on for tomorrow's race. We'll have to have a consistent
car, one that we can run hard lap after lap, because the key will be to stay
with the leaders and make up as many positions as possible on our pit stops.
Otherwise, this track will be very difficult to get around people. I think
we definitely have a car capable of a top-five finish. I would just love
that because I really need some points."
