Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola are
sitting 12th on the provisional starting grid for Sunday's Molson Indy
Vancouver after what turned out to be an eventful first round of qualifying
today on the streets of Vancouver.  Kanaan managed a fast lap of 1 minute,
2.509 seconds (102.671 mph) around the 1.781-mile temporary street layout at
Concord Pacific Place.  The 60-minute session was red-flagged twice after
accidents by Jimmy Vasser and Bruno Junqueira.  Both were unhurt, but the
stoppages prevented most teams, including Kanaan's, from completing the
maximum allowable 15 qualifying laps.

Paul Tracy is on the provisional pole after a lap of 1:01.888 (103.600 mph).
Scott Dixon qualified second at 1:01.939 (103.515 mph), and Kenny Brack
qualified third in 1:01.948 (105.500 seconds).

Practice continues Saturday morning with final qualifying set for 1:45 p.m.
local time (4:45 p.m. EDT).  Speed Channel will carry the final qualifying
session live with a 90-minute show beginning at 4:30 p.m. EDT.  Sunday's
race begins at 1:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. EDT) with a live broadcast
set for Speed Channel.

 "I'd like to blame it on the traffic, but that's really not a good excuse,
anymore.  My car wasn't perfect, but I never got two consecutive clean laps,
either.  It got to a point where I'd get a good lap, and then hit traffic
and laugh out loud in the car thinking how stupid this has become.
Everybody waits until the last 20 minutes to go and then we're all in each
other's way out there.  It's looking like a better and better idea idea to
go out there much earlier and get your laps in, especially if this is how
sloppy the last 20 minutes of our sessions are going to be.  Anyway, it's
definitely going to lead to more creative ways that teams are going to use
their 15 laps.  But it's just so hard to decide to go until there is enough
rubber down on the track.  Oh well.  We did what we could.  We had a pretty
big setback this morning when we lost the last 25 minutes of practice with a
problem we developed.  We were fastest by about two-tenths of a second at
the time, so we lost a lot of momentum and time on the track to improve our
car."
