Georgia Gears Up for Manufacturing Bid
Perhaps frustrated that it has seen its neighbors winning the establishment
of new automotive assembly plants, there are growing signs that the state
of Georgia may be interested in competing for a new $700 million
DaimlerChrysler plant that would eventually employ some 3,000 people. DCX
is reported to be discussing the project with South Carolina and Florida
officials, but according to a report filed in the Star Tribune, Georgia
state officials last month purchased 1,500 acres of land for $23 million
near the intersection of I-95 and I-16. It's anticipated that the land
would become part of an incentive package offered to DCX.
DCX does not expect to make a final decision on where to locate the plant
until next year. In the meantime, the
courting and the bidding have begun as each state begins to assemble
incentive packages aimed at wooing the plant to their state. In some ways,
it's like doing the limbo. How low can you go?
