Racing Legend Red Farmer to Race at Illinois and DuQuoin
State Fairs!!!
Racing Legend Red Farmer to Compete at Illinois, DuQuoin State Fair!!
Macon, Illinois-July 22, 2002
The last member of the south’s famous "Alabama Gang" to compete on the
one mile dirt ovals of Illinois’ two state fairs was the late Davey
Allison in the mid nineteen-eighties. The lure of the unique style of
racing afforded by full bodied stock cars on the mile dirt tracks of the
Midwest has lured another member of Alabama’s famous racing fraternity
to both Springfield and DuQuoin, as ageless Red Farmer plans to make his
debut at both facilities this summer.
Farmer is a legend in stock car racing circles, his career dates back to
the 1940’s when coupes frequented the short dirt tracks of the south,
and NASCAR raced on the beach. Red raced with the NASCAR sanctioning
body throughout it’s early years until the 1970’s, then turned his
interest to infrequent appearances with the ARCA stock cars, mostly on
the superspeedways.
Farmer admits to some prior experience on a dirt mile, racing at the now
defunct Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta, Georgia during the fifties.
Presently, Red races late models on the dirt in Kentucky, and the
opportunity to pair with current ARCA star Jason Jarrett helped Farmer
make his decision to appear at both Springfield and DuQuoin.
Not only will Farmer be a teammate to Jarrett, but a mentor as well. Red
is known for mentoring some of the best talent to come out of the south,
including friends Bobby and Donnie Allison, as well as the late Neil
Bonnett. Farmer helped Davey Allison become a star, and was helping
Clifford Allison move up the racing ladder when Allison’s life was cut
short at Michigan in the 1990’s.
Red will join Jason Jarrett and Frank Kimmel for at least three drivers
with NASCAR ties appearing for the 40th annual PAR-A-DICE Allen Crowe
Memorial 100 at Springfield, and those three will battle Ken Schrader in
the 51st Federated Auto Parts Southern Illinois 100 at DuQuoin on Labor
Day. Other NASCAR stars are mulling over the opportunity to appear at
one or both races, so expect further announcements to be made in the
future.
When Bob Sargent and the people of Track Enterprises took over promotion
of auto racing at the Illinois and DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in 1993,
they promised bigger and better things for race fans and for race
drivers. Entering the 10th year of Track Enterprises association with
the two mile dirt tracks in Illinois, the action promises to better than
ever. Track Enterprises has been instrumental in improving the
facilities, gaining the first night race at DuQuoin, and restoring the
large fair race crowds seen years ago while keeping the traditional fair
events in place.
The Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield kicks off a busy month of
fairground racing with the 42nd Corona-Tony Bettenhausen Memorial 100
for the USAC Weld Silver Crown Championship Dirt Cars Saturday August
17th, followed by the 40th PAR-A-DICE Allen Crowe Memorial for the ARCA
ReMax Stock Cars on Sunday the 18th, joined by the Wynn’s Sportsman
Nationals.
On Labor Day Weekend, the action switches to the beautiful DuQuoin State
Fairgrounds, when the Southern Illinoisan newspaper presents the 52nd
running of theTed Horn Memorial 100 for the USAC Weld Silver Crown
Series Sunday September 1st, and the Federated Southern Illinois 100 for
the ARCA ReMax series on Labor Day. The UMP Modifieds will appear at
DuQuoin both days, with the 20-mile Bill Oldani Memorial set for Labor
Day as well.
The action closes on Sunday, September 15th with the 11th annual
Illinois Fall Nationals for UMP Late Models and Modifieds at the
Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. Tickets can be obtained by
