FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ZETEC CHAMPIONSHIP ALUMNI ENJOY MUSIC CITY

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (July 23, 2002)—This past weekend Formula Ford 2000
Zetec Championship alumni left the music city, Nashville, Tenn., singing a
happy tune, winning two races and capturing four podiums finishes.
Racing under the lights, the Indy Racing League Firestone Indy 200 featured
an intense battle to the checkered flag. Alex Barron, in only his 11th
career IRL race, used a fast car and an off sequence pit strategy to get to
the front of the field. With 10 laps remaining, Barron took the lead, which
he would never relinquish. Holding off Gil de Ferran on two restarts, Barron
captured his first-career win by 0.4234 second. The win gave Barron, who
co-won the 2002 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year award, seven consecutive
top-10 finishes and moved him to fifth in the point standings.
Joining Barron on the podium at Nashville was fellow Zetec Championship
alumni Sam Hornish Jr. The podium finish gave Hornish Jr., the defending IRL
Champion, four consecutive podium finishes and moved him to third in the
championship.
In addition to the IRL race, Nashville hosted the second race in the newly
formed Infiniti Pro Series. The Pro Series race featured several Zetec
Championship alumni competing, with two dominating the race.
Second-generation driver Arie Luyendyk Jr. started second and jumped to the
lead on the opening lap. Luyendyk Jr. proceeded to lead the opening 10 laps,
before being passed by fellow Zetec Championship alumni Corey Witherill.
Driving a perfect car, Witherill led the remainder of the race uncontested,
capturing his first career win. The win propelled Witherill into the
championship lead, while Luyendyk Jr. moved up to fourth in the point
standings.
The Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship season continues with Rounds Nine
and Ten at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, August 10-11, racing conjunction
with the CART FedEx Championship.
