Evernham Motorsports Fields an ARCA Car with Driver Casey
Atwood at Pocono
STATESVILLE, N.C. (July 22, 2002) - Evernham Motorsports announced that the organization will field a Dodge Intrepid R/T in the ARCA race Saturday, July 27, at Pocono Raceway. Casey Atwood, who currently drives the No. 7 Sirius Satellite Radio Dodge in the Winston Cup Series, will drive the No. 19 car.
"We have an ongoing commitment to stay on the cutting edge of advances in our sport for ourselves and Dodge," said Ray Evernham, President and CEO of Evernham Motorsports. "Our test teams have been working on a number of these trends, and now it's time to test them in actual race conditions. Entering the ARCA race with Casey will allow us to see how they translate on the race track."
Sammy Johns, test team and research and development coordinator for Evernham Motorsports will serve as Atwood's crew chief. The No. 19 Winston Cup race team will pit the car.
"I really like Pocono," said Atwood, currently the youngest driver in the Winston Cup Series. "We finished 11th there earlier this year in the No. 7 Sirius Dodge. When Ray asked me if I wanted to help out by running the ARCA car, it sounded like a great opportunity. Plus, I get to work with Sammy (Johns, Atwood's former crew chief) and help Ray and Dodge with their R&D. It'd be great if we could pull out a win, but we're running to get a little more seat time and to gain some information."
Evernham Motorsports may field an additional test team in future ARCA races, but no definite schedule has been announced. Evernham Motorsports also fields a Winston Cup test team. The organization attempted to qualify the No. 91 Dodge Intrepid R/T earlier this season with Dick Trickle at Talladega.
