TEAM TARGET SCORES TOP-15 FINISH AT NEW HAMPSHIRE
Spencer remains in 23rd place in NASCAR Winston Cup championship points
CONCORD, N.H. (July 21, 2002) - The No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T driven
by Jimmy Spencer finished in 11th place in the New England 300 at New
Hampshire International Speedway. Spencer remains in 23rd position in
NASCAR Winston Cup championship points; he is 19 points behind Dave Blaney
who is currently in 22nd position.
Team Target started the 300-lap event in 34th position. Spencer moved his
way into the 20s before he spun out in turn two. There was no damage to the
Target Dodge but the team performed a four-tire pit stop on lap 20. Spencer
restarted 37th and began to work his way back through the pack. By lap 50,
he was in 25th position.
A two tire pit stop following the next caution on lap 57 put the Target
Dodge out in 12th place on the restart. Spencer raced in the top-20 for the
remainder of the race while the team continued to adjust on his tight race
car. Spencer finished the event in 11th place.
"We got spun out real early," Spencer said following the race. "The team
never gave up. We had some excellent pit stops, but it was a terrible day on
the track. There was a lot of pushing and shoving. The track was terrible.
There was a lot of rubber built up on the outside. We never got a second
groove worked in. We really wanted to finish in the top-10 and we almost
did, but we didn't quite make it."
Ward Burton, driver of the No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge, won the New England
300. Next on the schedule for the No. 41 Target team is the Pennsylvania
500 at Pocono Raceway on July 28, 2002.
