July 20, 2002 Vanderwyst wins 'Final Qualifier' race Field set for Sunday's Mopar Parts 300 at Calgary's Race City Speedway CALGARY, AB - Ten CASCAR Super Series racers took part in Saturday night's 'Final Qualifier' race to determine the rest of the starting field for Sunday afternoon's Mopar Parts 300 at Race City Speedway. Pete Vanderwyst of St. Thomas, ON lined up fourth on the grid for the 25-lap sprint and passed polesitter Jeff Lapcevich on lap 6, en route to the victory. For winning the race, Vanderwyst's Exide Pontiac will line up 23rd in the field of 34 starters in the Mopar 300, the eighth round of the 2002 CASCAR Super Series. The first 22 spots were determined on Friday night during time trials and in the Twin 100 Qualifying Sprint Races. Lapcevich's Crime Stoppers / Fastline Chevrolet held on for second, and came home almost five seconds behind Vanderwyst. Rookie CASCAR racer Joe Plazek finished third in his Playstation2 Chevy, just ahead of another rookie, Cole Pearn (Kubota Pontiac). Mopar Intrepid driver Ron Beauchamp Jr. will start on the pole in Sunday's Mopar Parts 300. Alongside of him will be multi-time Race City event winner Peter Gibbons.
