Beauchamp wins the pole for the Mopar Parts 300
Kennington and Gibbons win their respective 100-lappers at Race City

CALGARY, AB - The first on-track activities of the Mopar Parts 500 Race
Weekend took place on Friday evening at Calgary's Race City Motorsport
Park. The 'Twin 100 Qualifying Sprint Races' - a pair of 100-lap events
around the high-banked, half-mile speedway - were won by DJ Kennington and
Peter Gibbons, respectively.
The first 100 lapper proved to be a good one for the Intrepid drivers. DJ
Kennington of St. Thomas, Ontario played a waiting game, this year, after
losing the same event, in 2001, with just five laps to go.
The driver of the #17 Castrol Intrepid followed polesitter and early
leader Ron Beauchamp until trouble with a lapped car, on lap 76, forced the
Mopar Intrepid driver high in turn 1 and allowed Kennington to take the
lead. Robbie Thompson of Port Elgin, Ontario also took advantage of
Beauchamp's misfortune and took over second place in his #9 Intrepid, for a
'one-two-three' Intrepid sweep of the first Qualifying Sprint Race of the
Mopar 500 Race Parts Weekend.
Peter Gibbons continued his string of success at Race City Speedway with
his wire-to-wire win in the second 100-lap Qualifying Sprint Race. The
Canadian Tire Chevy driver collected his third 100-lap checkered flag at
the Calgary oval in as many years. And as he did last year, the
Stouffville, Ontario racer led ever lap en route to the win.
Scott Steckly of Milverton, Ontario was second in his first ever race on
the Calgary half-mile. Three-time CASCAR National champion Dave Whitlock
finished third in his Fast Lane Taurus. He slid across the the finish line
sideways after colliding with Al Turner's Blue Streak Intrepid in the last
turn.
Prior to the Twin 100s, time trials to determine the two front row
starting positions for Sunday's Mopar Parts 300 took place. Ron Beauchamp,
Jr. of Windsor, Ontario was the first competitor on the track. His lap of
17.526 seconds, in his #60 Mopar Parts/Exide Batteries Intrepid, held up as
the quickest of the 34 drivers who took part in time trials. Peter Gibbons
was second quickest and will start alongside of Beauchamp, on Sunday
afternoon, on the outside of the front row.

CASCAR NOTES: The annual Kubota Pit Stop Competition was held in downtown
Calgary's Eau Claire Market on Thursday afternoon. Offering fans a chance
to see pit stop action up close, the CASCAR Super Series teams changed the
right side tires on their racecars - as quickly as possible - without
incurring penalties for running over equipment or leaving lug nuts loose.
This year's winners were the crew of the #02 Ford driven by Mount Albert,
ON, veteran Kerry Micks. Micks' UFCW crew finished their work in just 14.54
seconds.
The crew of Ron Beauchamp Jr.'s #60 Mopar Parts Intrepid, from Windsor, ON
actually bettered the performance of the Micks Motorsports crew, but lost a
second in penalties when a lug nut was not tightened sufficiently. The
penalty left the #60 team's time at 14.62 seconds - only eight-hundredths
of a second behind the winning #02 team.
