NOTES OF INTEREST: Fresh from the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway, the
world’s most versatile stock car tour is headed back to the short-track
world for the Pork The Other White Meat 200 at Berlin Raceway before it
steers for the 2.5-mile Pocono triangle the following weekend. This
year’s Pork The Other White Meat 200 will be the 15th ARCA RE/MAX Series
event at Berlin since the series first raced there in 1958. Past ARCA
RE/MAX winners at Berlin include Bob James and Tim Steele with 2 wins;
and tied with 1 each: Andy Hampton, Iggy Katona, Bob Keselowski, Frank
Kimmel, Bob Senneker, Harold Smith, Les Snow, Nelson Stacy, Ramo Stott &
Don White. Frank Kimmel and Tim Steele are the only past champions
entered. Steele, the hometown favorite and defending race winner, hasn’t
raced since Michigan Int’l Speedway on June 15. This year’s Pork The
Other White Meat 200 has its share of local flavor in the line-up
including 9-time Berlin late model track champion Fred Campbell driving
for Berlin Raceway veteran Vern Slagh who is also entered as well as
weekly regulars Ray Clay and Billy Shotko making his career-1st ARCA
RE/MAX Series attempt. In addition, Chad Blount, fresh from his victory
at Kentucky Speedway last Saturday, cut much of his short-track teeth at
Berlin and finished second to Steele in last year’s RE/MAX Series race
here. Steele also started his career at Berlin before moving on. Slagh
is the oldest driver in the field at 62 while Greenwood, Indiana rookie
Shelby Howard is the youngest at 16. Howard, in last year’s race at
Berlin, finished a career-best 6th. 3-time champ Kimmel, the point
leader heading to Berlin, has led a whopping 687 laps in 11 of 12 races
this year. The next driver in line in the lap-leader category is Ken
Schrader who led 177 laps en route to his victory at South Boston
Speedway on July 3rd. There are 2 sons of former ARCA champions in the
field including Todd Bowsher whose father Jack won ARCA titles in 63, 64
& 65 and Billy Venturini whose father Bill won ARCA crowns in 87 & 91.
The elder Venturini will be providing color commentary in the booth
alongside veteran broadcaster Rick Benjamin for the live Speed Channel
telecast. Hueytown, Alabama racing legend Red Farmer is entered in a
Jason Jarrett back-up car. Jarrett finished 5th in last year’s Berlin
classic.
