FOR RELEASE: July 16, 2002GM Indonesia Employees Help Build Houses For Flood Victims
Jakarta - More than 30 employees from PT General Motors Indonesia (GM Indonesia) joined Habitat for Humanity on July 13 to help build four houses for victims of February's devastating floods. Over the next six months, a total of 50 houses will be built in the village of Sukatani using funds provided by GM Indonesia and Habitat for Humanity New Zealand.
The contribution by GM Indonesia is part of a US$50,000 agreement with Yayasan Mitra Mandiri to implement GM Cares. The community program was created to assist underprivileged residents living in the vicinity of GM Indonesia in Bekasi.
In addition to helping fund the construction of houses, GM Cares also is providing free medication and consultation service to about 10,000 residents in Pondok Ungu, Jatibening, Pondok Gede, Duren Jaya and Bekasi Utara.
"As a good corporate citizen, GM Indonesia is pleased to be able to give something back to the local community," said Harold Koh, President Director of GM Indonesia. "By working together and contributing both our funds and labor, GM Indonesia and our employees hope to improve the lives of dozens of our neighbors."
"We are grateful for GM's donation," said Rick Hathaway, East and Southeast Asia Regional Director of Habitat for Humanity. "The donation is not just helping build one house, it is helping build an entire community. We hope other companies will follow GM's lead by taking an active role in social responsibility and community development."
To kick off construction of the new houses, a ceremony involving GM employees and representatives of Habitat for Humanity and Yayasan Mitra Mandiri was held at GM Indonesia on July 13. Miss Universe 2002, Oxana Federova, was on hand to greet volunteers and pass along her best wishes.
Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1976. It has built and rehabilitated more than 100,000 houses, sheltering more than 500,000 people in some 2,000 communities worldwide.
Yayasan Mitra Mandiri is a non-government organization affiliated with United Way International. Its aim is to improve the quality of life of the people of Indonesia.
