GUINN RACING WHISTLIN’ DIXIE AFTER LUCKY WIN NUMBER 13

Birch Run, Michigan (7-12-02) by Wendy Wellman

Current championship points leader Chad Guinn put on a near-perfect
performance Friday night at Dixie Motor Speedway, earning the outside
pole and leading every lap of the 50-lap event. The victory marks the
Erie, Michigan driver’s 13th with the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series,
and puts him high atop the points race- nearly 200 points above second
place.

“Our year is going unbelievably well so far,” said Larry Guinn, Chad’s
father and spotter. “At all the races, we go to each track feeling like
we can win it. We just have a real desire to try and be the best, plus
we have a really good crew that gets along well together. As far as the
points go, we’ve been in this situation before, and things can all of a
sudden turn completely around and go the other way. We’re not counting
on anything until it’s official.”

Chad Guinn thwarted any advances made by Team Witwer to challenge him in
the BFI-Northland Collision-Coastal Coating Services Ford. Late in the
race, Brett Oakley spun while he was in second place and was placed at
the rear of the pack. The Fort Wayne, Indiana-based Team Witwer moved
forward, grabbing second, third and fourth place at the checkered. Joe
Wormcastle took second in the Witwer Construction Chevy, his son Pete
Wormcastle was third in the Preferred Painting & Roofing-Witwer
Construction Chevy, and modified driver Steve Christman was fourth in
the Witwer Racing Engines Chevy.

“After the incident with Brett, I didn’t know if he had been holding up
the Fort Wayne guys or not,” Chad Guinn said. “When we went back to
green, the first few laps worried me. But then I saw that I was pulling
away from them. I just concentrated on being smooth and conserving the
tires. This win definitely takes some pressure off of us, but we still
have to keep doing what we’re doing, keep finishing in the top-five, and
we’ll be alright in the end.”

Two-time champion Robbin Slaughter piloted his Carmen’s Vacuum-NAPA Auto
Parts Ford to fifth place, while the John Pierce Plumbing Ford of Darren
Jones, Fairfield, Ohio, took sixth. Piqua, Ohio’s Jeff Speakman followed
closely at seventh in the Pennzoil-National Auto Lube Ford.

Eighth place was nabbed by Paul Hahn, of Canton, Michigan in the Hahn’s
Collision-Certified First-Pate Mfg.-Fox Auto Parts Ford, while 1999
champion Bill Withers, Columbus, Ohio, was ninth in the Mannings
USA-Hall Electronics-Wachholz Engines Ford. Withers tied fellow
competitor Tully Esterline (12th) for the Ed & Company Hard Charger
award, with both drivers jumping ahead five positions from their
starting grid spots. Last week’s feature winner Phil Bozell, Portage,
Michigan rounded out the top 10 in the Bob Stoner Racing Ford.
