Jimmy Watson Wins UMP Late Model
Feature at Hales Corners Speedway
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., July 13-Jimmy Watson scored a popular victory in the UMP
late model feature Saturday on Gary Belman Design Homes Waukesha County Night
at the Hales Corners Speedway.
Rick Scheffler started from the pole and led the 30-lap headliner as
Watson charged from eighth on the grid to run third by lap five. Watson got
past T.J. Dolhun for the second spot on lap 11 and set sail for the leading
car of Scheffler.
Watson used the outside line up the backstretch to take the lead on lap
16 and began to overtake the tailenders on lap 17. Russ Scheffler,
meanwhile, worked his way past brother Rick to run second to Watson at lap
19.
Russ caught Watson amidst slower traffic on lap 23 and used the inside
line in turns three and four to take the lead. Watson stayed with Scheffler,
however, and returned the favor three laps later to retake command. Once in
front, Watson held Scheffler at bay to score the victory. Bret Sievert
placed third, with Jim Zdroik fourth and Scott Specht fifth. Rick Scheffler
faded to sixth at the finish.
Don Scheffler led the 20-lap sportsmen feature until Don Sorce Jr. took
command at lap 11 using the outside line in turn four. Defending sportsmen
champ Dave Gorny got past Scheffler for second and muscled Sorce aside to
take the lead along the frontstretch at lap 15. Gorny then held off Sorce in
a heated race to the finish in the final five laps to take the win. Sorce
settled for second, with Jeff Tondryk third, Scheffler fourth and Bob Brent
fifth.
Jim Zdroik won the 20-lap modified feature over his son Jason Zdroik.
Brian Crapser placed third, with Mike Knurr fourth and Spencer Frost fifth.
Jim Reinhardt edged Lon Meagher in a photo-finish decision to win the
20-lap Hales whales feature. The 20-lap Whales feature which was postponed
last Saturday night was won this week by Shane Heaney. Chris Blake won the
feature for the new 4-cylinder class.
Racing continues at the Hales Corners Speedway on Saturday night, July
20. The night will be topped by a 30-lap UMP late model feature. A full
program of sportsmen, modified and Hales Whales racing is also planned, plus
the new 4-cylinder class. Time trials are at 6:15 p.m., with racing
immediately following qualifying. Hales Corners Speedway is located on Hwy.
