Fogarty Captures Outside Pole at Burke Lakefront
Airport;
Diaz To Start Fourth ... Gurney Seventh on Grid
CLEVELAND, Ohio (July 13, 2002) - Before the sun broke over the top
of the Cleveland skyline on Saturday morning, there was anticipation that
many of the drivers in the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship would break
into the 1:06 range around the 2.106-mile, 11-turn temporary road course at
Cleveland's Burke Lakefront Airport. That time would be needed to knock Jon
Fogarty off of the provisional pole.
By the end of Saturday afternoon's qualifying, six drivers had
cracked into the 1:05 range and a total of 15 had posted times under
Fogarty's track record lap of 1:07.050 = 113.032 mph that was set in
Friday's provisional qualifying. This included Fogarty. of Portola Valley,
Calif., and teammates Luis Diaz, of Mexico, and Alex Gurney, of Newport
Beach, Calif.
Unfortunately, Fogarty's new and improved time of 1:05.660 =
115.468 mph fell short of a tremendous late session lap by Ryan Hunter-Reay
who clocked at 1:05.225 = 116.238 mph. It was the third pole of the season
for the Boca Raton, Fla., driver who has captured previous poles at Laguna
Seca and Chicago.
Regardless, Fogarty's provisional pole earned a guaranteed front
row starting spot. Both Fogarty and Hunter-Reay earned one bonus point each
cutting the points lead held by Canadian Michael Valiante down to 13 and 17
points, respectively. Valiante posted the fifth quickest lap with a time of
1:05.813 seconds (115.199 mph). For Fogarty, it will be his third front row
start of the season along with seven of eight starts in the first two rows.
"I found a good lap," said Fogarty. "It wasn't as good as Ryan's
but the car was still good. Qualifying was a bit frustrating because I had
both good feelings and bad feelings. I knew there were certain mechanical
things with the car that limited me from running faster. It's a good
feeling to be able to identify the problems and know what to change. It's a
bad feeling when you realize it's final qualifying and you won't have time
in that session to change anything. My car has more speed in it and I know
what direction to go to obtain it. I'm happy to be starting off the front
row. We'll work through it in warm-up. It's good to be on a normal
three-day race weekend so we have time to make more changes."
Diaz, who provisionally qualified sixth, improved to row two in
final qualifying and will start directly behind Fogarty with the fourth
quickest time of 1:05.683 = 115.427 mph.
"Traffic was even more of a problem today than yesterday,"
reflected Diaz after qualifying. "If you didn't time it correctly you could
run the entire session and never find a clear lap. I think that happened to
me. It's too bad because I have a fast car and faster than most of the
field. We'll fine tune overnight and see if there is anything we can do
better during Sunday's warm-up."
Gurney was also victimized by unresponsive traffic - a frustration
for him because his Behr/Castrol Swift 014.a is very, very fast. Gurney
qualified seventh with a time of 1:06.055 = 114.777 mph.
"We improved a bit," said Gurney. "We still had the same problems
with traffic as other sessions. We had to play pretty conservative in this
session. We went to fresh tires early to insure a better time but we were
full with fuel too. It's a case of being 'off the ball' yesterday. At least
we closed the gap."
The session was slowed once for two minutes due to a spin in Turn 9
spin by Eduardo Figueroa. Figueora made no contact and continued on in the
session to log the 24th fastest time. It is expected the 27-car field will
be lightened by three cars that failed to qualify within 110 percent of the
two fastest qualifying time.
The CART Toyota Atlantic Championship will be back into action
tomorrow morning with a 15-minute warm-up session beginning at 9:00 p.m.
ET.
The 32-lap Round 8 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship race at
Cleveland's Burke Lakefront Airport begins at 10:55 a.m. ET. Speed Channel
will televise the 32-lap event from Cleveland on same day delay at 5:00
p.m. ET with a repeat showing on July 15th at 3:00 p.m. ET.
