Burke Lakefront Airport - Cleveland, Ohio - 2.106-Mile Temporary Road Course
Round 9 of 20 on the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series

Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola will
start Sunday's Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland, Presented by U.S. Bank, on
the outside of the third row after final qualifying this afternoon. Kanaan
recorded a fast lap of 57.713 seconds (131.367 mph) around the 2.106-mile
temporary road course at the Burke Lakefront Airport adjacent to downtown
Cleveland. It was some three-tenths of a second better than the provisional
qualifying time that put Kanaan second on the grid on Friday. But four cars
snuck past him on the final grid behind polesitter Cristiano da Matta,
dropping Kanaan back to sixth position.

Da Matta, who's going for a record fifth consecutive CART FedEx Championship
Series victory here this weekend, held onto the pole position he earned on
Friday with a lap of 57.040 seconds (132.917 mph) today. He'll be joined on
the front row by Patrick Carpentier, who clocked a lap of 57.470 seconds
(131.923 mph) to take the second spot on the grid. Dario Franchitti
qualified third in 58.518 seconds (131.895 mph), followed by Christian
Fittipaldi at 57.499 seconds (131.856 mph) and Michael Andretti at 57.645
seconds (131.522 mph.).

Race time Sunday is 1:30 p.m. EDT with a live broadcast set for CBS-TV.

TONY KANAAN QUOTES

"It was a mess again, traffic-wise. I got only one clean lap out of the 15
laps we get to run. But that's racing. I'm not going to blame anything on
that because it's the same for everybody. The Pioneer-WorldCom Honda was
better than it was yesterday, but the weather changed a little bit today and
I'm not sure we had the best setup possible for the conditions. I agreed
100 percent with what we did. But it just turned out to not be the best
thing to do. Again, I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but we are
still very much in the process of learning about this (new Lola) car. That'
s the price we pay for not being allowed to go testing. Look at Cristiano.
He's been in his Lola for a season and a half, and had the benefit of an
offseason's worth of testing. All of the other teams, particularly the ones
that switched from Reynard to Lola in midseason like we did, are at a big
disadvantage. But, again, we did what we had to do and we'll get it figured
out sooner or later. We learn every weekend. We've made pretty good
progress again this weekend. But those guys are just miles ahead of us
right now. Hey, that's life, and that's racing, and we'll just keep
fighting. Sixth place is not a bad place to start, especially on this
track. I'm looking forward to a good day tomorrow, just like I do every
race weekend. Hopefully it will be our day this time."
