Tony Kanaan put his #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola on the
front row today in provisional qualifying for Sunday's Marconi Grand Prix of
Cleveland, Presented by U.S. Bank.  Kanaan recorded a fast lap of 58.092
seconds (130.510 mph) around the 2.106-mile temporary road course layout on
the tarmac and runways of the Burke Lakefront Airport near downtown
Cleveland.  The lap came on his final trip around the track and vaulted him
from ninth to second on the speed charts.  It was Kanaan's best qualifying
session since he put the Pioneer-WorldCom Honda second on the starting grid
at Japan's Twin Ring Motegi in May.

Cristiano da Matta, who's going for a record fifth consecutive CART FedEx
Championship Series victory here this weekend, earned the provisional pole
with a lap of 57.641 seconds (131.531 mph).  Scott Dixon had the third-best
lap of the session at 58.094 seconds (130.506 mph).

Final qualifying is set for 1:45 p.m. EDT Saturday, preceded by morning
practice at 10 a.m.  Race time Sunday is 1:30 p.m. EDT with a live broadcast
set for CBS-TV.

"It think it did me some good to spend the past week at Cristiano's house.
After the race at Toronto last week, I told him I wanted to see for myself
what is his secret to all his recent success.  I can't check out his team,
so the next best thing is to check out his house.  He's been on such a roll,
lately, that I wanted to eat like him, sleep like him, play video games like
him, drink his milk, whatever I could learn from him.  It must have worked
because here I am!  Seriously, though, we've been struggling so much since
we switched chassis (from Reynard to Lola in May) and we finally got it
together today.  I'm still not happy with my car, but sitting second on the
grid right now and still not being happy with my car must be a good thing.
I got blocked not once, but twice at the end of the session by the same guy.
I don't know why that happens.  I finally got a clear lap on my very last
hot lap and it turned out to be the big one.  I'm really happy for my guys.
They've been working so hard and we've had such frustrating results that
this is a big lift for them.  The secret here to just keep on fighting, and
this kind of thing is the best motivator.  So now we'll go back and work on
the car and try to make it better because tomorrow is a whole new day."
