Former GM Executive Richard C. Gerstenberg Dies at 92

DETROIT AP reported that Richard C. Gerstenberg, a retired chairman and chief executive officer of General Motors Corp., has died after a long illness.

Gerstenberg, whose career spanned 42 years, died Thursday at his home in Paradise Valley, Ariz. He was 92.

Gerstenberg served as GM's chairman and CEO from January 1972 until his retirement in November 1974. He also was a member of the company's board of directors from November 1967 to May 1980.

"Dick had many accomplishments over his long and distinguished career at GM," company chairman Jack Smith said. "He was known for his high integrity and his deep concern for the well being of the company and its employees. Dick left an impressive legacy and will be missed."

Gerstenberg was born Nov. 24, 1909, in Little Falls, N.Y. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1931 and joined GM in 1932 as a timekeeper with its Frigidaire Division in Dayton, Ohio.

He transferred to the company's Fisher Body Division in 1934 and to its central office in 1936. He was elected executive vice president of finance and a member of the board of directors in November 1967.

From April 1970 to January 1972, Gerstenberg served as vice chairman of the board of directors and the chairman of the finance committee.

Gerstenberg is survived by his daughter Christine Graye, son Barry and two grandchildren.

Visitations have been scheduled for Sunday in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Wednesday in Troy. His funeral will take place Thursday in Troy and will be followed by a luncheon in Bloomfield Hills.
