Valeo Improves Driver Interface On New Peugeot 807

PARIS--July 12, 2002--Valeo (Paris: FR; OTC: VLEEY) today announced that Hi-line versions of the new Peugeot 807 multi-purpose vehicle, which goes on sale this month, will mark the debut of an innovative multifunction controller designed and produced by Valeo.
The multifunction controller, a unique design of a circular multifunction switch with an integrated electronic module, is conveniently positioned adjacent to the driver on the centre console, below the main fascia. The multifunction controller will allow drivers of the new 807 to select and control the radio/CD, mobile telephone or satellite navigation functions. Linked to an LCD screen, housed in the centre of the fascia, the multifunction controller will facilitate the display of menu options for each of the three functions and also confirm the specific settings selected by the driver.
Commenting on the significance of the development program for the multifunction controller, Martin Haub, Group Vice President, Research & Development and Product Marketing, said, "Valeo welcomed the opportunity to assume design responsibility for integrating control of these important driver systems into one multifunction switch. Excellent technical cooperation with Peugeot's design department has been a major feature of the design and development programme. The result is an innovative, practical and cost-effective switch design."
For the Peugeot program, Valeo has drawn upon its substantial experience in the ergonomic design of switches together with significant systems integration expertise. These capabilities, augmented by an appreciation of human sensory preferences including tactiles, sound and vision, have culminated in a switch design with significant benefits both to the customer and 807 drivers.
By consolidating driver control of the radio/CD, mobile telephone and navigation into one switch, Valeo has enabled Peugeot to achieve a clear, uncluttered yet modern fascia design. This design freedom is attributed to the reduced need to accommodate a whole array of individual switches associated with conventional control of the three systems.
A multiplexed communication interface, based on the PSA "VAN" architecture, is integrated into the multifunction controller so that only four wire connections are needed to link to the LCD screen and the in-car entertainment, telephone and navigation systems. The switch function uses a transparent silicon membrane with carbon contacts. Due to the use of Hall-effect switching technology, a high number of cycles can be maintained with a high degree of reliability. The peripheral keys adopt the "pivoting palette" principle for improved compactness, functionality and ergonomics. For clarity and durability, a laser engraving process is used for the illuminated symbols on the controller.
The multifunction controller is designed to ensure that driver will find the operation of the switch and interaction with the screen menus both convenient and intuitive.
Produced at the Valeo facility at Annemasse, France, the multifunction controller is just one of many Valeo systems and components specified on the new Peugeot 807. Wiper systems, lighting systems, ultrasonic park assist, engine cooling, electrical systems, transmission components and switches will also be supplied as original equipment.
