KIRK SHELMERDINE RACING
Notes & Quotes
Event / Date: Tropicana 400 / July 14, 2002
Venue: Chicagoland Speedway
Car: Naturally Fresh Racing Ford Taurus
Back on Track:
· Best known behind pit wall for the four Winston Cup Championships he won as crew chief for Dale Earnhart, Sr., Kirk Shelmerdine will be on track behind the wheel as owner / driver for Kirk Shelmerdine Racing.
· "We're the newest team going into Chicago, but we're experienced people. We're able to avoid pitfalls that many new guys get trapped into."
· "Our goal is to represent ourselves well in Chicago. There will probably be about 50 cars there, so the odds are pretty tall for us to have great success. We're going to give it our best effort."
· "The anticipation for this weekend is heavy. We've been working very hard to prepare and we're anxious to get to the track to follow through with our plans."
Power for Raceday:
· Shelmerdine will be racing a Ford Taurus powered by a Robert Yates' engine.
· "We expect to have those unexpected troubles this weekend, but power will not be a problem."
Practice in Chicago:
· Shelmerdine has hands-on experience at Chicagoland Speedway, getting in 70 practice laps last week at the track.
· "Practice in Chicago was a good trip for us. We were able to wear out some tires and get our feet wet. We gathered a lot of information, so I think we know what we need to do to be successful on the track."
· "We went to Chicago with a laundry list of things to do, and we're getting things crossed off the list. We've been working long hours preparing for this race, but getting off the ground for the first one is the toughest."
· "I was surprised by our speeds in Chicago. We weren't running any qualifying set-ups, so it didn't feel like I was going that fast on the track. I'm expecting a big difference in my lap times in traffic."
More Races in the Future:
· With backing from the Atlanta-based Eastern Foods, Inc and associate sponsorship from Jackaroo Sauces., Shelmerdine expects to run in at least four Winston Cup races during the 2002 season.
· "EFI has been involved in racing for a few years, and they're enthusiastic about this partnership. We want to go out and make them proud this weekend."
· "We're as prepared as possible for this race, and if our effort is not good enough, we'll be back often. We look to improve every time and make a good showing."
