Parallel Hybrid Electric Power Assist System Seamlessly Provides Load Leveling
GOLDEN, Colo., July 10 UQM Technologies, Inc., a developer of alternative energy technologies, announced today that its high efficiency proprietary electric motor/generator and electronic inverter are powering a strategic power assist parallel hybrid electric system developed and patented by Electromotive, Inc., Manassas, Virginia, the developer and patent holder of the first direct fire, distributorless ignition system used by major automotive OEM's today.
The Electromotive strategic power assist system consists of a UQM® motor/generator, a UQM® electronic inverter and the Electromotive electronic engine management computer. In the patented configuration, the UQM® motor/generator is controlled to output power under certain conditions to assist the internal combustion engine at its most inefficient operating points. The UQM® machine, while operating in motor mode, seamlessly provides 'load leveling' to the internal combustion engine improving performance and drivability while lowering fuel consumption and emissions. The electronic engine management computer optimally controls both the internal combustion engine and the motor/generator by monitoring engine and battery charging functions and instantaneously directing operating characteristics. As a result, smoother, cleaner and more efficient internal combustion engine operation is achieved and power is generated and stored in the battery pack during vehicle deceleration and idle, or any time the engine produces excess power.
"We have been working with Electromotive for a number of years in support of the development of their strategic power assist system. The capability of our motor/generator and electronic inverter technology to operate in either motoring mode or power generation mode and to change dynamically between the two modes in millisecond response time, is critical to the 'load leveling' of the internal combustion engine," said William G. Rankin, UQM Technologies' President and Chief Executive Officer. "What distinguishes this patented power assist system is its level of precise control and adaptability to a wide range of internal combustion engines and the packaging of the UQM® motor/generator where the alternator it replaces is located, creating the potential for the first retro-fit parallel hybrid electric system".
